Honeywell to design controls for bio-ammonia plant

June 7, 2011 – Honeywell has been selected to help SynGest design a proposed first-of-its-kind processing facility that will produce ammonia from biomass. The southwest-Iowa plant will process as much as 400 tons of biomass each day to produce nitrogen fertilizer, which helps reduce fossil fuel emissions and will be sold to U.S. agricultural companies and farms.

Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) has agreed to provide front-end engineering (FEED) support and a wide range of technology that will comprise the plant’s fully integrated control system, including its Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS), UniSim process simulators and field instrumentation. Additionally, the proposed facility will use a pressure swing adsorption technology developed by Honeywell UOP to purify hydrogen used in the plant’s processes.

“HPS is actively engaged in developing breakthroughs in the bio-fuels and bio-chemicals space,” said Tracey Haslam, Americas vice president, Honeywell Process Solutions. “We’re investing our products and know-how in SynGest’s distributed industrial scale model because it represents the future of biofuels and bioproducts production.”

“Honeywell’s unparalleled skills in renewable fuels and bioproducts, and special expertise in automated process design and controls will add enormous value to SynGest's commercial-scale projects once implemented,” said SynGest CEO Jack Oswald. “Honeywell’s track record of success will help our projects be strong investment opportunities.”

Experion is HPS’ primary process control and automation platform that helps streamline operations by integrating various subsystems throughout a facility, including process control, safety systems and instrumentation. This approach provides rich information to personnel to help them make the best decisions on the plant floor. Additionally, many facilities around the world use UniSim to make processes more efficient and improve operator skills by testing processes and train operators in offline environments. The UOP technology will purify hydrogen processed in the plant’s two-stage gasification system.

About SynGest:

SynGest Inc. is focused on replacing the fossil fuel energy used in agriculture with entirely sustainable and renewable alternatives. To that end, SynGest is entering commercial deployment of its patent-pending biomass gasification process to produce nitrogen fertilizer (BioAmmonia and BioUrea) from renewable biomass. The U.S. now imports more than 50% of its nitrogen fertilizer, a $150 billion worldwide market, which accounts for the single largest cost and energy input into agriculture. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, CA with engineering and business development offices near Chicago, IL and Des Moines, IA. SynGest has entered into strategic relationships with Honeywell Process Solutions (process control and large scale industrial processes), The Weitz Co. (EPC/General Contractor), Unitel Technologies (process engineering), Alion Science and Technology (gasifier optimization).
