| ABB cables to strengthen Danish power grid | ||

May 31, 2009 - ABB won an order from SEAS-NVE, a leading Danish energy company, to provide a cable solution that will help strengthen the existing transmission grid and enable the integration of more wind power from the Rødsand II offshore wind park, expected to be commissioned in late 2010. ABB will supply, install and commission 116 km of underground cable and 56 km of submarine cable, both rated at 145 kV. The cable technology being deployed is designed to manage overload and has a double circuit option, which helps secure transmission even if the cable gets damaged . This also facilitates the transmission grid's efficiency and flexibility. This is another example of how ABB technologies are helping to integrate clean, renewable energy, thereby facilitating more wind power to flow into the electricity system, said Per Haugland, global head of the Grid Systems business within ABBs Power Systems division. The cable solution will contribute to fulfilling Denmarks vision of renewable energy serving 30 per cent of the countrys energy consumption by 2020. ABB cable systems are used all over the world, connecting offshore wind farms and oil and gas platforms to mainland grids, providing cross-border power links and feeding power into major cities. ABB has installed a number of landmark projects, including the worlds longest underwater cable, the 580-km NorNed power link between Norway and the Netherlands. ABB was recently awarded the contract to build the Eirgrid power link, connecting Ireland and the UK, which will increase power trading facilities between the two countries and support the growing wind power industry in Ireland. ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs around 120,000 people. |
