August 8, 2011 - ABB won an order from Hyundai Steel Company (HSC) to supply the drive system for the extension of its existing heavy plate mill in the Chungnam province of South Korea. The integrated mill produces high-quality automotive and shipbuilding steel plates.

Hyundai Steel Company is part of the Hyundai Motor Group and is one of the leading steel producers in Korea.

The expansion will significantly increase HSC’s production capacity. The mill, which currently produces 1.5 million tons of steel plates per year, will increase its annual capacity to 2.0 million tons and expand its product range. It is scheduled to start operation at the end of 2013.

ABB’s delivery will help the mill reduce its energy consumption; increase its production speed and throughput volume while maintaining precise material specifications and high quality.

“Our successful history and excellent working relationship with this customer helped us to win this important order,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. “We are committed to achieve HSC’s new production and efficiency goals at this site and will provide proven technical solutions, services and support.”

The scope of supply includes a comprehensive drive system with low- and medium-voltage drives that utilize Direct Torque Control (DTC), motors, and other electrical equipment. This will maximize productivity and equipment reliability in the plate mill, as well as optimize its energy use, to help it to run efficiently and profitably. ABB’s patented DTC concept provides dynamic performance in terms of torque and speed while maintaining superior precision. ABB will also provide project engineering, supervision, commissioning, training and other support services.

ABB worked with HSC on the first phase project for this mill, and delivered a similar scope of supply, in 2007. The mill went into operation at the end of 2009.

ABB’s Process Automation division delivers industry specific solutions and services for industrial automation and plant electrification. These solutions help customers meet their critical business needs in the areas of energy efficiency, operational profitability, capital productivity, risk management and global responsibility. Available industry specific solutions include process control, instrumentation, analytics, safety, plant optimization, telecommunications, energy management and power distribution.

ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 130,000 people.
