June 28, 2011 – ABB won three contracts collectively worth $29 million from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe to modernize the company’s 7-stand hot strip rolling mill no 1 in its Duisburg-Bruckhausen steel plant at Germany. ABB will supply automation for drives, drives, power systems and equipment, and related project services. The orders were booked in the first quarter of 2011.

The project is part of ThyssenKrupp’s ongoing initiative to modernize its hot strip mill facilities with state-of-the-art automation and drive systems to produce a new range of steel products. The company operates four hot strip mills with a total annual capacity of around 15 million metric tons; after the modernization it will produce lightweight steel for the automotive industry, material for recyclable tin cans, as well as steel for oil and gas pipelines. It will also start producing electrical steel for use in wind turbines, hybrid engines and other applications; for these grades of steel, consistent properties and precise dimensions throughout the entire hot strip are critical.

ABB’s solution will provide operational efficiency, stable processes and reliable electric supply, and the ability to control product quality to exacting standards for material thickness tolerance. The scope of supply for this project includes electrical equipment such as main transformers, synchronous motors (11 MW, 8.5 MW and 1.5 MW) and the corresponding medium voltage converters. ABB will also provide auxiliary drives, low voltage switchgear and drives automation based on its high-performance AC800PEC controller for rolling mill applications, as well as related engineering, commissioning and other site services, and training.

The orders are part of a framework agreement between ABB and ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe; ABB has delivered numerous projects under this agreement, including the earlier modernization of hot strip rolling mill no 2 at the same location.

"This project is a continuation of our successful history and ongoing working relationship with ThyssenKrupp," said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. "We are committed to providing the proven technical solutions, services and support to make this modernization project reach the customers new production and efficiency goals."

ABB’s automation and power solutions maximize productivity and equipment reliability in rolling mills, help optimize energy use so plants run efficiently and profitably from the start, and provide the stable, secure power supply needed for these energy-intensive processes.

ABB’s Process Automation division delivers industry specific solutions and services for industrial automation and plant electrification.
