August 25, 2010 – ABB won orders worth a total of $24 million from international oil and gas facilities service provider Petrofac to design and deliver comprehensive state-of-the-art power infrastructure, systems and automation equipment for the ASAB Full Field Development Project in Abu Dhabi.

Led by the Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO), the ASAB development is one of the largest upstream projects in the region and will help ADCO reach its production targets. Petrofac International is the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contractor for the project.

“As a proven performer in the oil and gas industry, ABB is proud to be a part of this important project in the UAE that will mark the country’s active role in future energy supply,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. “ABB has more than 50 years of experience with oil and gas projects all over the world; this contract win highlights ABB's ability to provide the electrical and automation solutions needed to supply reliable power and increase industrial productivity for regional oil and gas customers.”

ABB will design and supply a host of power equipment, including air-insulated medium-voltage switchgear and power transformers.

The scope of supply also includes spacing-saving, environmentally-friendly MNS 3.0-type low-voltage switchgear, which uses Alu-zinc coated materials in all the frames and subdivisions to reduce chemicals used in the coating process. The delivery also includes a substation monitoring and control system and integrated motor control system, which covers nine substations and one central control building. ABB’s solution is based on the latest technology with innovative IEC61850 integration to intelligent relays for monitoring, control, remote parameterization and disturbance retrieval.

Petrofac project director, Mark Cowley, commented: “We are pleased to have awarded this work to ABB and to be working with them on this project which is a key project for the development of Abu Dhabi’s Oil production goals in coming years.”

ABB’s Process Automation division delivers integrated automation solutions for control, plant optimization, and industry-specific application knowledge and services to help process industry customers worldwide meet their critical business needs in the areas of operational profitability, capital productivity, risk management and global responsibility. These industries include oil and gas, power, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, metals, minerals, cement, marine and turbocharging.

ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 117,000 people.
