Baumüller Opts for State-of-the-Art Ethernet Technology

Baumüller Opts for State-of-the-Art Ethernet Technology
Realtime solutions designed to meet the highest requirements

Nuremberg/Hartford. The modern Ethernet technology employed by Baumüller is a prerequisite for the highest quality as well as highly synchronous and precise production workflows. Baumüller has broken new ground in combining the drive bus, field bus and various interfaces in the automation architectures in a cost-effective manner.

Baumüller has specialised in the automation of high-precision production workflows for many years already. Now the technology is being perfected: the realtime solutions from Baumüller meet the highest requirements. The utilisation of Ethernet not only simplifies the automation process but also significantly reduces the interfacing and implementation costs.

The EtherCAT slave controller, a high-performance, Ethernet-based, realtime-capable, synchronous field bus system, has been available at Baumüller since summer 2004. This controller was implemented in an option module as an EtherCAT interface for the drive system b maXX 4400. Software profiles of existing standards were implemented on the basis of the EtherCAT interface. Today, Baumüller already supports CANopen profiles and the profile Servo over EtherCAT. This drive profile, which is based on the SERCOS standard, paves the way for the realisation of cost-effective field bus interfacing with the EtherCAT slave controllers ESC-10 and ESC-20. The planned introduction of the EtherCAT slave controller ASICs in 2005 will enhance cost-effectiveness even further.

Integrating the new field bus technology from Baumüller is extremely easy: from a user perspective, the drive and automation profile structures remain practically unchanged as do the application programs.
