ControlEng Software Gets to Grips With Servo System Sizing

November 1, 2004
ServoSoft is an engineering software tool that sizes all components of a servo system including motors, drives, and gearboxes as well as infeed, capacitor and bleeder modules. This breakthrough software enables engineers to complete complex multi-axis designs quickly and with confidence, sizing up to 20 axes in one project in a shared bus or stand-alone configuration.

ServoSoft is the most precise model available in the industry due to such advanced features as true S-curving throughout the entire system, power flow through every component, precise floating and regulated bus calculations, true torque-to-current conversion (ie torque constant is not assumed linear), multiple peak torque curves for different voltages and continuous torque curves for different motor cooling methods, and gearbox efficiency curves (ie efficiency varies with speed).

Extensive charting clearly displays all aspects of system performance including power, current, torque and motion profiles. All databases are completely open so that users are able to add, edit or delete any database entry. Additional features include nine drive mechanisms, full units support for metric and US/imperial, as well as a complete bill of material. ServoSoft is billed as the ultimate design tool for servo based electric machines, robots, machine centres, and product handling and automation applications.

"Other motor, drive and gearbox sizing tools are limited as they are a marketing tool first and a design tool second. ServoSoft is the servo engineer's ultimate design tool. To date, we have not found a single off-the-shelf software package that adequately addresses all aspects of servo system sizing. Today, most engineers rely on their own custom spreadsheets and explicit assumptions for at least some part of their design. This will be history once they try ServoSoft. We believe that ServoSoft is a leap forward in servo sizing models, and will become the design platform for servo engineers everywhere", says Christian Vardin, President of ControlEng Corp, in Toronto, Canada.

For drive, motor and gearbox vendors and distributors, ServoSoft aids the application and field engineers as well as end users learn and help themselves to design better solutions. In doing so, reducing the vendor's cost to provide customer support. In large organizations such as OEMs who manufacture hundreds or even thousands of machines and robots per year, the cost savings and improved customer value are multiplied through better and efficient designs. In these organisations, ServoSoft's value is leveraged significantly. Because ServoSoft dramatically reduces the design process by as much as 50% from weeks to days, design cycles decrease, products reach the market sooner, and resources are freed up to work on other projects.

The ControlEng website (www.controleng.ca) features an exceptional 15 minute tutorial on ServoSoft, as well as a free demo package for download.
