HANNOVER MESSE 2007, 16 to 20 April

  • Nationwide initiative for young people, technology and the future launches at HANNOVER MESSE in April 2007
  • Partners from government, industry and the business community pledge their support

Fewer and fewer young people in Germany are showing any interest in taking up a career in technology. As a result, industrial companies are finding it difficult to recruit, and many young people are missing out on a possible career option. The new initiative TectoYou is designed to counteract this trend with a program of information and events targeted directly at young people.

The aim is to refocus the attention of young people on careers in the technology-based industries and to make them aware - through interesting events and direct dialog with engineers and technicians working in industry - of the career opportunities and prospects that are available to them. As the world's biggest trade fair for industrial technology, HANNOVER MESSE is the ideal setting for such a venture. Over 6,000 industrial companies and various organizations from all over the world will be exhibiting at the show, bringing with them the new ideas and innovations that form the substance and basis of countless careers in technology. And, of course, the companies exhibiting at HANNOVER MESSE are also the providers of jobs for the next generation of young technicians and engineers.

Complex technology needs to be explained to the young in a comprehensible, contemporary and inspiring way - which is precisely what the TectoYou initiative sets out to do at the upcoming HANNOVER MESSE.

TectoYou is sponsored by the Federation of German Industry (BDI) under its business development program "Germany - Land of Ideas" and by Deutsche Messe. An extensive list of institutions, industry associations and companies have already signed up as co-sponsors, and are supporting the venture with activities of their own. The list includes the VDE, representing the electrical engineering, electronics and IT sectors, the VDMA, representing the mechanical and plant engineering industries, the ZVEI, the central federation representing manufacturers in the electrical engineering and electronics industries, acatech, the Council for Technical Sciences, the Fraunhofer Society (FhG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The Minister heading the BMBF, Dr. Anette Schavan, has kindly agreed to act as patron of TectoYou, and Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel has also given her personal backing to the new initiative.

"HANNOVER MESSE is the premier marketplace for technology-based industries. As such there is no better platform for the presentation of the project TectoYou. With the business initiative "Germany - Land of Ideas" as co-organizer, Deutsche Messe has a partner that is totally committed to promoting Germany as a powerhouse of innovations and a country with a long-term future as a manufacturing base. As joint sponsors of that business initiative, the BDI and the Federal government have put the full weight of their support behind the TectoYou project. For the German business community, as potential employers, it is important to make young people aware of the rapidly changing demands in the technology-based industries, and to enhance the appeal of this type of career. An increased demand for traineeships would strengthen Germany's SME business sector, advance the cause of economic stability in this country and send a clear message to other countries beyond our borders. This is the way to ensure that the next generation is heading in the right direction for the future." So says BDI President Jürgen R. Thumann, who had a meeting with the German Chancellor in January to report on progress with the TectoYou project. Also present at that meeting was Sepp D. Heckmann, Chairman of the Board at Deutsche Messe. The Chancellor was among those who helped to get the new recruitment initiative off the ground last spring at HANNOVER MESSE 2006.

Events for young people at HANNOVER MESSE
At this year's HANNOVER MESSE from 16 to 20 April the pavilions outside Hall 11 will become the central port of call for schoolchildren and students between the ages of 15 and 20. Among the items on the program here are national heats for the 2007 "SkillsGermany" careers competition in technical occupations such as mechatronics, electrical engineering and network technology. The winners will take part in the "WorldSkills" world championships in Japan in November 2007.

Another highlight is the "RoboCup German Open 2007", staged on a 5,000 m² "playing field" beneath the Expo Canopy at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds. Approximately 100 teams of young engineers from 15 countries will line up with their football-playing robots to compete against each other in various categories.

The climax of the TectoYou program at HANNOVER MESSE 2007 will be the "Festival of Technology" on 20 April. It starts at 10.00 a.m. with the main opening ceremony, attended by numerous public figures. Federal Minister Anette Schavan will use this platform to officially launch the new initiative. This will be followed by a varied program of activities, with information and discussion offerings, opportunities for dialog and special guided tours of the Fair. These will take the young visitors to selected sections of the show, where they can meet and talk with personnel responsible for in-house training and recruitment at leading industrial companies. In the afternoon the "TectoYou.Starclub" offers a program of live action and live music to round off the Festival in style.

TectoYou is also aimed at young professionals, university graduates and young persons who are coming to the end of their training and need to find their way around the world of work. For them a visit to the "Job & Career Market" in Hall 2 is highly recommended, as are the guided tours of the show planned around specific themes. Hall 2 is home to the trade show "Research & Technology", which will be of general interest to all young fair-goers. Many universities and research institutes exhibit here every year, showcasing the industrial technology of tomorrow.
