Emerson Chosen by Chemicals Manufacturer to Automate Production of Antimicrobial Preservatives

Clariant selects PlantWeb(R) architecture to deliver operating efficiency based on predictive maintenance information

AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 3, 2003) - Emerson Process Management has announced contracts for PlantWeb digital plant architecture to automate two production areas at a Clariant manufacturing plant in Pontypridd, South Wales. Clariant is a multinational chemical company, employing 28,000 people worldwide.

The Clariant performance chemicals division will use the DeltaV(TM) digital automation system, a core PlantWeb architecture component, to automate a new methyl paraben production plant. Methyl paraben is an antimicrobial preservative used in shampoo, foam bath, and other personal care products. The DeltaV system was selected due to its ease of configuration and maintenance, and the system has subsequently been expanded to automate a new polymer plant.

Emerson also supplied Rosemount(R) pressure transmitters and vortex flow meters, as well as Fisher(R) control valves fitted with FIELDVUE(R) digital valve controllers. These intelligent field devices include diagnostics that monitor their own health as well as that of the process, and can provide valuable information to AMS predictive maintenance software, powering PlantWeb's ability to deliver maintenance efficiencies.

"We have realized benefits in that DeltaV is easy to configure and maintain, and to use for production of trend data," said Paul Davies, C & I engineer at Clariant. "We plan to integrate data from the DeltaV system with our management systems. We also plan to install the Emerson AMS predictive maintenance software. Longer term we will be passing data through to our computerized maintenance management system in order to automate much of our works order system. The process and maintenance information from PlantWeb will enable us to realize the full benefits that this digital plant architecture is able to offer."
