Emerson launches I/O Interface to migrate PLC systems to PlantWeb(R) digital plant architecture and DeltaV(TM) Systems

New Legacy I/O Interface allows easier migration by preserving existing hardware assets while updating plant automation

AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 25, 2003) - Emerson Process Management has just
launched the new Legacy I/O Interface product from Mynah Technologies. This new interface permits the rapid and easy migration from existing PLC systems to PlantWeb(R) architecture and the DeltaV(TM) digital automation system (www.EasyDeltaV.com), without the need to replace the existing installed I/O subsystems.

Conversion to Emerson's PlantWeb digital plant architecture enables a manufacturer to achieve up to 30 percent capital and engineering savings, and 2 percent gains in operating efficiency, including up to a 40 percent improvement in maintenance efficiencies.

"Migration is a burgeoning issue among automation end users," said Larry O'Brien director of research at ARC Advisory Group. "Process automation systems suppliers must offer the ability to migrate from legacy hardware platforms both in the DCS and PLC worlds without the need for costly and complex point-to-point wiring. The ability to preserve existing hardware assets that do not need to be replaced is also essential."

"This new Legacy I/O Interface allows customers to cost effectively move from their mature PLC systems to the PlantWeb architecture and our award winning DeltaV system while maintaining all of the end-user's wiring terminations," said Duncan Schleiss, vice president of marketing for Emerson's Process Systems business. "This first version of our new interface allows customers to connect directly to their Allen-Bradley type 1771 remote I/O on PLC2 and PLC5 systems and bring their process signals directly into a DeltaV system and reap the benefits of today's digital technologies like embedded advanced control and digital busses. And, since the protocol converter automatically brings the proprietary I/O into the
DeltaV configuration utility, users can easily configure this I/O using our DeltaV Explorer, with no additional interface tables or data mapping."

"Recent studies have shown that there are significant numbers of aging automation systems still in use," said Martin Berutti, director, business development at Mynah Technologies. "Until now, there were few good alternatives for end users to migrate these mature systems to current generation digital automation systems. We see this as a significant opportunity to provide cost effective migration solutions that maintain existing investments in wiring and engineering. Our Legacy I/O Interface product will make it easy for customers with mature PLC equipment to make the switch to the DeltaV system." The suite of products that make up the PLC interface includes:
- A PLC I/O interface module that converts the industrial protocol
- A firmware upgrade for the DeltaV programmable interface module
- A PLC I/O configuration utility
- Cabling to connect to the remote I/O

This interface is also designed to work with other PLC systems including the GE Genius Bus and Modicon/Quantum S908 Remote I/O. The industrial protocol converter is available in the DeltaV 2-wide carrier form factor and can be either DIN rail- or panel-mounted. This small footprint makes it easy to install in existing I/O racks, where space is often limited. The Legacy I/O Interface is designed to be mounted near the existing remote I/O racks and communicates to the DeltaV system over distances of up to 5000 feet over a 1 Mbaud asynchronous RS485 link.
