October 25, 2006 - World Premiere of Multivendor Controller to Controller Communication in Hard Real-Time Technology Providers Participating in the Demonstration: B&R, Baldor, Fraba Posital, Lenze, Parker, Wago OPW Guidelines implemented in Demonstration: PackConnect Communication in Hard Real-time (1 µs Jitter) ETHERNET Powerlink Open Multivendor Demo PackML Packaging related Machine Language PackSoft Open Software Programming Tools Highlights of the Demonstration: PackConnect Worldwide, for the first time ever the ETHERNET Powerlink Standardization Group (EPSG) has solved the challenging task of realizing deterministic, hard real-time communication between multiple controllers of different vendors. This ETHERNET Powerlink controller to controller communication with cycle times down to 200 µs and a jitter of 1µs now enables machine builders and end users to tightly integrate complete lines consisting of multiple machines with different controllers with a determinism so far only available by pure motion control networks. In the past multiple digital discrete signals were used to transmit information like machine states, error numbers or fast trigger signals via parallel wires from one machine to another. The synchronization of motion control between two machines required the cumbersome integration of an encoder and fast inputs on another machine. State of the art ETHERNET Powerlink communication technology transmits information from one to all other machine controllers by using one single network. Main benefits of this breakthrough in communication for easier and more flexible line integration are: PackML The PackML 3.0 State Model and Pack Tags play an important role on top of the PackConnect based ETHERNET Powerlink communication by standardizing the content like machine states, error messages and time information communicated between the machines of a line. This way PackML creates a uniform way of communication, so different machines on a line are able to understand each other easily. PackSoft PackSoft based open programming tools provide a standard way of mapping the machine process to code. Time to market of a machine is greatly reduced and machine diagnosis simplified. OMAC Packaging Workgroup OMAC Booth The OMAC Packaging Workgroup is very pleased with the excellent support from technology providers demonstrating OPW guidelines with demonstration units in our booth. The ETHERNET Powerlink demo has implemented the latest version of PackML, version 3.0, as well as the demanding cell bus motion interoperability which requires high speed motion synchronization of motors controlled from multiple motion controllers from two or more vendors across an industry cell bus, says David A. Bauman, OMAC Technical Director. About ETHERNET Powerlink ETHERNET Powerlink (EPL) is the only Real-Time Industrial Ethernet protocol with microsecond precision available on the market today. Among ETHERNET Powerlinks major advantages is the fact that the protocol can be implemented on any standard Ethernet hardware and chip. ETHERNET Powerlink is the only Real-Time Industrial Ethernet solution with microsecond speed and precision which does not need support through proprietary hardware components or ASICs. It is based purely on international standards with over 150,000 EPL nodes operating trouble-free in 20,000 series machines throughout the world. ETHERNET Powerlink is managed by the EPSG (ETHERNET Powerlink Standardization Group), an open association of automation technology end users, manufacturers and research institutions. The groups objective is to offer an open standard for Industrial Ethernet, with precise, real-time response in the microsecond range, high availability and safety mechanisms. EPSG members include ABB Robotics, Altera, Alstom, Baldor, B&R, Hirschmann, KUKA Controls, KW Software, Lenze, Pepperl + Fuchs and Tetra Pak. |
