Garrettcom Introduces Standard Ethernet LAN Products to Support Power System Substation Market

Magnum 125 VDC LAN Equipment is First to Support Utilities/Power Application Requirements
March 27, 2002, Fremont, Calif. – Utility companies rely on 125V direct current to run their plants and substations, and their LAN equipment should be capable of employing the power source, according to Frank Madren, president of GarrettCom, Inc. Utility companies agree. GarrettCom is the first company to introduce a wide range of Ethernet switches and hubs with designed-in dual-source 125 VDC power supplies. The company also offers a 125 VDC version of its hardened outdoor switch.

GarrettCom will show these products at the 2002 Western Power Delivery Automation Conference in Spokane, Wash., April 2.

GarrettCom provides switches, hubs, and other LAN equipment to power stations around the globe, due in large part to the company’s ability to understand and meet the needs of its ultimate customers. Working through integrators and engineering consultants such as Dynavar Networking, Inc., Calgary, Alberta and Schweitzer Engineering, Pullman, Wash., GarrettCom products are a mainstay for GE Harris plant installations in Oman, Peru, and Canada. Magnum products have also been installed in utilities such as Northeast Utilities, Hartford, Conn.; TVA, Oak Ridge, Tenn; TransAlta Utilities, Alberta, Canada; and Western Area Power Administration, Lakewood, Colo.

"When plants are using direct current for their automation and control systems, it is often much easier for them to install equipment that uses the same power. This is particularly true in remote or unmanned stations," said Madren. "Our power supply options can enable Ethernet to fit into their environment, eliminating the need for special power conversion equipment, and increasing reliability and up-time."

GarrettCom’s Magnum 125 VDC LAN products combine the flexibility and breadth of an enterprise line of products with the extended operating temperature, noise immunity, and power features required for industrial automation and control.

"Availability is a big issue in the power industry. GarrettCom's line of 125 VDC LAN products allows us the reliability, modularity, and redundancy we need without having to provide work-arounds or specify custom parts," said Marlowe Ulriksen, technical consultant, TransAlta Utilities.

"Our Magnum 125 VDC fiber switch was simple to install and its modularity affords WAPA the flexibility to upgrade components with no special configuration requirements," said Daryl Pankowksi, network engineer, Western Area Power Administration (WAPA).

About the Products

Magnum dual-source 125 VDC LAN products for the power substation market provide fiber built-in flexibility and support high-speed ports for larger LANs. Magnum LAN products that offer a standard configuration including dual-source and 125 VDC include:

* Magnum Quad-Series Fiber Switches
* Magnum 8000X Mixed-Media Hub
* Magnum 3000X 10 Mb Hub, SNMP
* Magnum 4K-Series Switches
* Magnum 3000-Series Hubs
* Magnum 1000-Series Hubs

Key features of the Magnum LAN products include: a mix of noise-immune 100 Mb and 10 Mb fiber built-in ports, configurable with any current fiber connector type; extended operating temperature range; and rack-mount capability for IT centers. The Magnum LAN products have high reliability, high availability through the dual-source option, and can be configured with optional AC worldwide power, 24 VDC, and -48 VDC power. Conformal coating can be applied to protect circuitry from exposure to extreme elements.

The Magnum P62F Hardened Switch for unheated/uncooled applications such as electrical substations, roadside control boxes, industrial plants, and above-the-ceiling sites complements the other 125 VDC hubs and switches. It provides six 10/100Mb switched RJ-45 ports and two 100Mb fiber ports for "daisy-chain" applications in a sealed metal case. Power sources include 125 VDC, AC worldwide power, or 24, -48 VDC power.
