What Factors to Consider When Selecting Your Switch

July 19, 2006 - Downers Grove, IL (July 18, 2006) - Before investigating all the features provided by an Industrial Ethernet switch, you should first consider exactly what this type of device is and what it does. Contemporary Controls’ R&D Manager Bennet Levine has written a document that will aid users in this process.

The document, Choosing the Right Industrial Ethernet Switch, discusses the many options when purchasing one including:
  • Auto-negotiation features
  • Managed vs. unmanaged
  • Advanced switch features such as IGMP snooping and redundancy
  • Environmental concerns
  • Determinism issues

Levine recommends that you consult your vendors to determine the features supported on their Industrial Ethernet switches. “As there is no standard that dictates all the mandatory features provided on an unmanaged or managed switch, you will need to ask your switch vendor which features they include in their products,” explains Levine.

As an Ethernet user, learn to play the game successfully. Reading Choosing the Right Industrial Ethernet Switch will help meet your Ethernet expecations in your applications. To view the document, visit (www.ctrlink.com/pdf/Extv6n1.pdf )
