September 25, 2011 - Honeywell will deploy its Experion Process Knowledge System and Safety Manager emergency shutdown and boiler protection system at a Fortum waste-to-energy facility in Klaipeda, Lithuania.

All of Fortum’s production sub-systems – both Honeywell and non-Honeywell – will be integrated into the Experion Human Machine Interface (HMI). Klaipeda plant operators will be able to centrally monitor and control all plant processes. Safety Manager will help reduce the potential for human incidents and asset damage at the site.

The new power plant will be fuelled by municipal and industrial wastes as well as biofuels. The production capacity will be approximately 50 MW heat and 20MW electricity. It’s expected there will be an increase in energy production efficiency. In addition, the CO2 emissions of the heat production in the area will reduce significantly.

The new power plant is expected to begin operation in the beginning of 2013.

“Fortum is one of the leading companies in environmentally benign and highly efficient combined heat and power production and is the leading company in Nordic countries in waste-to-energy production. We chose to work with Honeywell due to it offering the most advantageous technical and commercial offer”, said Petri Härmä, project manager, Fortum.

“Our technology will collectively serve to drive safety, reliability, efficiency and sustainability at the site, enabling Fortum to more quickly see a return on its investment,” added Timo Saarelainen, managing director, Honeywell Finland.
