October 26, 2009 ISA published Collaborative Process Automation Systems, a book written by ABBs Martin Hollender and a team of ABB and third-party industry experts. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in Collaborative Process Automation Systems (CPAS), and discusses topics such as engineering, security, enterprise connectivity, advanced process control, plant asset management, and operator efficiency. David Woll, VP Consulting Services at ARC, contributed a chapter on The ARC Advisory Groups CPAS Vision. The key to an extraordinary automation project is to first decide the roles and objectives you want people to have then empower them with the automation technology they need to be successful. CPAS is well suited for this, it is the technology in the advanced People, Processes and Technology paradigm, says Dave Woll, VP Consulting Services at ARC. "This book provides an excellent overview of CPAS to help deepen the understanding of what it is and how it can be used to improve the performance of any process plant." The book is ideal for industrial engineers, as well as graduate students in control and automation. It covers the system architecture and infrastructure required for a CPAS, as well as important standards like OPC and the ISA-95 series of standards. This in-depth reference focuses on the differences between a CPAS and traditional automation systems. Implications on modern automation systems are outlined in theory and practice. We wrote this book as an educational piece for engineers at all points in their careers, to discuss what industrial control systems are really about, and their impact on process manufacturing, said Hollender. Beyond the basic control functions, modern process control systems present a wealth of further functions which allow the safe, secure, and efficient operation of an automated plant and deliver significant benefits to the plant owner and operator. This book provides a practical approach to using these systems and their many functions to achieve the greatest benefit. Martin Hollender is a scientist at ABBs Corporate Research Center in Ladenburg, Germany working in the Process and Production Optimization Group. During his eight years at ABB he has worked with development teams on solutions for operator effectiveness, alarm management, plant information systems, integrated automation systems and many others. ABB is a recognized subject matter expert on Collaborative Process Automation Systems, with extensive experience in developing and implementing automation solutions that include leading-edge CPAS functionality. ARC noted that ABBs flagship Extended Automation System 800xA is consistent with ARCs vision of CPAS model when it was first introduced in 2004.
