Matrikon Delivers Reliable Steam Production to BHP Billiton's QNI Yabulu Refinery

  • Control system solution integration underway on primary boiler
  • Matrikon's solution is expected to extend the life expectancy of boiler by 15 years
  • This is the third phase of the QNI Yabulu Refinery boiler upgrade begun in 2003 to support plant expansion
  • Matrikon’s portion of the contract is valued at AUD $3.6 million

Edmonton, AB – September 27, 2005 - Matrikon Inc. (TSX: MTK) today announced that its Australian subsidiary has signed an AUD $3.6 million subcontract with Alstom Power for the upgrade of the coal fired boiler at BHP Billiton's Queensland Nickel Yabulu Refinery near Townsville (Queensland, Australia).

Following the successful implementation of Matrikon's solution on the No.1 and 2 oil fired boilers at the nickel and cobalt processing operation, an agreement has been made to apply the control system solution to the site’s main duty boiler, Boiler No. 4. Matrikon will integrate products from its ProcessSuite™ and Connectivity Suite to provide alarm and event analysis as well as the communication infrastructure which connects various plant hardware and software systems.

The No. 4 boiler is the heart of the utilities that power the Yabulu site, supplying steam for the process plant and generating electricity to run the 24-hour a day operation. The upgrade of the boiler is intended to extend its life for a further 15 years and modernize the control system for reliable operations.

"Matrikon is committed to delivering value through our solutions and we are pleased that BHP Billiton has chosen Matrikon to continue on with our successful implementations at the Yabulu Refinery," commented Sam Crisafulli, Managing Director of Matrikon’s Australian Operations.
