New Fieldbus Training Center To Open In China

Foundation partnering with industry to keep pace with fieldbus adoption

HOUSTON, Texas, Oct. 5, 2004 — The Fieldbus Foundation, conducting a press briefing at the ISA EXPO 2004 Exhibition & Conference in Houston, Texas, today announced an agreement in principle to open a fieldbus training site at the Yanshan Simulation Training Center in Beijing, China. The new demonstration and training site will help keep pace with rapid industry adoption of FOUNDATION™ fieldbus throughout China and Far East Asia.

Operated by China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec Corp.), the Yanshan Simulation Training Center develops advanced simulation technology, and provides simulation and process automation training, for more than 1,500 engineers and technicians each year. The Center has played an active role in improving Sinopec’s technology since its establishment in 1994. It consists of two teaching and research buildings, and one general building, equipped with the latest process control equipment. Training courses cover topics such as instrumentation, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Distributed Control Systems (DCSs), safety management systems, fieldbus and advanced process control.

The Yanshan Center laboratory includes multi-discipline training facilities that will be used to provide FOUNDATION fieldbus educational and application consultancy services to end users, suppliers and system integrators. Plans call for the training site to be operational by Spring 2005

Fieldbus Foundation President and CEO Richard Timoney praised the cooperation with Sinopec Corp., terming it “another example of how the foundation and its members are working with industry to enable the implementation of FOUNDATION fieldbus.” Mr. Timoney said, “Sinopec is recognized as a leading process plant operator in the Asia-Pacific region. Their help in establishing a state-of-the-art fieldbus training facility will ensure that China’s end user community—one of the fastest growing markets in the world—has full access to this revolutionary technology.”

The Yanshan Simulation Training Center lab will be equipped with FOUNDATION-compliant host systems and fieldbus instruments provided by Fieldbus Foundation members. The foundation will support the facility through the creation of a training curriculum for end users, and training of the center’s instructors.
