Parker adds Ethernet Powerlink to motion controllers
Rohnert Park, CA, May 3, 2007 - Parker's Electromechanical Automation Division announces that some of its motion control products are now enabled with Ethernet Powerlink motionbus technology to increase system performance while decreasing overall system cost and installation time. Parker's Ethernet Powerlink- enabled products include the ACR9030 and ACR9040 multi-axis EPL controllers and three power levels of the Aries EPL servo drives.

Ethernet Powerlink is a high-speed, digital motion-bus solution connecting a motion controller to multiple drives and I/O points using standard Ethernet networking hardware. This centralized, real-time communication system for automation and motion control makes Ethernet deterministic for real-time industrial applications. Ethernet Powerlink systems combine the high performance of centralized motion control with the lower costs of decentralized machine architectures. System design and machine installation times are greatly reduced due to the simplified, inexpensive and readily available Ethernet cables that replace traditional, expensive analog control and feedback cables.

According to Marc Feyh, product manager for Parker Electromechanical Division, the unique benefits of an Ethernet Powerlink motionbus system appeal to a broad range of market segments. "The Ethernet connections result in higher reliability and decreased installation times for all machine builders," he said. "These benefits directly translate into greater machine up time and faster time to market - both critical success factors for OEMs."

Feyh said industrial packaging markets will benefit from the modularity that the distributed Powerlink architectures allow, while taking advantage of the system's EtherNet/IPT connectivity to the outside world. "On the other side of the spectrum, medical markets will utilize this same modularity in order to easily control machinery from a remote location. Semiconductor and electronics industries will both take advantage of the increased performance of the centralized system control, while still benefiting from the reliability and time to market advantages."

To support the new release, Parker's ACR-View Software Development Kit has been upgraded into an integrated programming environment used to configure and program the entire EPL system, including controller, drives and I/O. ACR-View is a powerful project-development suite that assists the user of the ACR family products in programming, debugging and commissioning their application. A single USB, Ethernet or serial connection to the controller is the only communications connection required.

Parker has plans to release additional EPL products, including the entire range of Compax3 servo drives, later in the year.
