PROFInet Installation Guideline Available Now

PROFInet Installation Guideline Available Now
Scottsdale, AZ–October 21, 2003–The PROFIBUS Trade Organization (PTO) has announced the all-new PROFInet Installation Guideline giving users the information they need to implement Ethernet-based PROFInet in both industrial and office environments. The new document will facilitate broad acceptance of Ethernet and Ethernet-based PROFInet by users in industrial automation. It will help both component manufacturers and system installers achieve time and cost-saving solutions for network communications, component selection and engineering.

The Guideline enables users to learn all about the requirements for system-specific network structures and topology, connection technology, cabling, field-wired cabling, high network availability, plus EMC load and mechanical ruggedness. The Guideline is based on the common standards IEC 11801 and EN 50173 for office areas but expanded to include specific conditions found in industrial production and field environments. The document also utilizes the knowledge base of numerous PROFIBUS International member companies to make specific installation recommendations.

The Guide discusses how communications networks in industrial corporations today primarily serve two roles; LANs based on Ethernet have established themselves as the predominant communication network in the office environment, such as in marketing and administration departments. Additionally, they serve as the primary communication network within engineering departments closely related to production departments with engineering and CAD tools. These Ethernet LANs have used information technology (IT) cabling techniques based on standards such as ISO/IEC 11801 and EN 50173. PROFInet takes the Ethernet networking standard to the production floor and field levels, where the cabling requirements are quite different from those of the office environment assumed in IEC 11801. The cabling structure depends heavily on the type of system, and the components are usually subjected to much tougher environmental conditions than those found in the office environment.

The PROFInet Installation Guideline No. 2.252 is available in English and German and may be downloaded by PROFIBUS members at www.profibus.com The specifications established in the PROFInet Installation Guideline will be integrated into the upcoming International standardization for Ethernet-based industrial installations.

The PROFIBUS Trade Organization (PTO) is a non-profit corporation working to enhance the PROFIBUS and PROFInet standards while educating and assisting device manufacturers throughout North and South America on the latest extensions and conformance tests associated with PROFIBUS and PROFInet.
