Rockwell Automation Rolls Out FactoryTalk™ Enabling Technologies and FactoryTalk-Enabled Software Products for Spring Coordinated Launch

FactoryTalk™-enabled software products help businesses build scalable automation systems that share manufacturing data and common services across the enterprise.

INTERPHEX, March 31, 2003 — Rockwell Automation has announced new FactoryTalk™ enabling technologies that help companies share manufacturing data and common services, helping reduce the time required to design, deploy, and maintain integrated automation systems. In addition, new FactoryTalk-enabled packaged products are now available from Rockwell Software.

The FactoryTalk integrated platform supports common services built into FactoryTalk-enabled software products from Rockwell Software and third-party vendors. FactoryTalk enabling technologies, including FactoryTalk Directory, FactoryTalk Live Data and FactoryTalk Audit provide specific capabilities to help manufacturers share common factory resources, access information across the enterprise, and track global system changes.

FactoryTalk enabling technologies
FactoryTalk-enabled products use FactoryTalk Directory to share a common address book, which automatically finds and provides access to factory resources such as data tags and HMI displays. Unlike a single database, FactoryTalk Directory provides searchable references to resources stored anywhere across a distributed system, offering the benefits of central data storage without the risk of a single point of failure.

Using this enabling technology, companies can build complex distributed systems in any location and later deploy the systems elsewhere by simply modifying computer names. Resources associated with the system are then available to every participating FactoryTalk-enabled product across the entire automation system, and any changes update immediately.

FactoryTalk Live Data manages connections between FactoryTalk-enabled products and data servers. It notifies clients when a connection is lost, automatically reconnects, and combines data from multiple controllers and servers into a single group with a single data server connection. This results in faster real-time data transfer and more reliable, efficient connections to data servers. It also assists in redundancy support for data servers by automatically handling detection and failovers for all FactoryTalk-enabled products.

FactoryTalk Audit helps companies maintain a comprehensive, central record of all changes made to a manufacturing system. This is particularly important for companies required to maintain compliance with U.S. government regulations in the pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries. With built-in diagnostic capabilities, FactoryTalk-enabled products can monitor system changes, generate detailed audit messages, and route messages to a central database, where they are available for tracking, analysis and reporting.

FactoryTalk-enabled products
Now enabled with FactoryTalk Directory, Rockwell Software RSView Machine Edition™ can access the shared common address book. Any changes made through the HMI update automatically across other FactoryTalk-enabled applications. RSView Machine Edition now can take advantage of FactoryTalk Live Data capabilities, providing fast, reliable access to real-time plant floor data.

Rockwell Software RSView™ Supervisory Edition 3.0 uses FactoryTalk-enabled fault tolerance and redundancy capabilities to provide backup to clients that rely on server information, without requiring any system restarts or operator intervention. These features allow RSView SE 3.0 clients to automatically detect a failed HMI or data server, seamlessly switch to another designated server, and continue operating with minimal interruption.

Rockwell Software RSAutomation Desktop™ helps companies manage complex automation projects through multi-user collaboration, work reuse, versioning and application management. Because its versioning system is tied into FactoryTalk Audit, messages about changes to any element of the project are immediately available across the entire automation system. This eliminates conflicting edits and duplicated efforts from team members and helps quickly identify who made changes to project elements, when and why.

Rockwell Software RSMACC™ (Maintenance Automation Control Center) detects and records altered electronic files, which is required by various industry regulations, such as 21 CFR Part 11. Enabled by FactoryTalk Audit, RSMACC provides a centralized repository for auditing plant-wide maintenance information associated with change management and asset health.

Rockwell Software RSBizWare™ RSSql™ is a MicrosoftÒ WindowsÒ-based industrial transaction processing system that provides a two-way link between control systems and enterprise database systems. Participating in a FactoryTalk application, RSSql has access to all data items available through the FactoryTalk Directory. Through RSSql, this information is then readily available to other RSBizWare suite products.
