September 13, 2011 - Open Systems International, (OSI) has been selected by Santee Cooper to upgrade and replace their legacy SCADA/EMS system with a new system based on OSI’s imonarch (Multi-platform Open Network ARCHitecture) platform.

Santee Cooper is the primary source of power distributed from South Carolina’s 20 electric cooperatives to more than 700,000 customers located in the state’s 46 counties. Santee Cooper also supplies power directly to 29 large industrial customers in 10 counties, the town of Bamberg, the City of Georgetown and the Charleston Air Force Base. A comprehensive new SCADA/EMS system based on OSI’s monarch automation platform will replace an existing Siemens system implemented in the late 1990’. Santee Cooper’s decision to adopt OSI technology has been based on a thorough evaluation of competitive products and the desire to implement an open, modern and easily adaptable platform to continuously meet the NERC CIP requirements.

Santee Cooper’s new monarch SCADA/EMS system includes advanced functionality of OSI’s next-generation Microsoft .NET based Graphical User Interface (GUI); Advanced Alarm Management System; Real-time and Historical Trending; Communications Front-end Processor; Historical Information System and Data Archiving; Inter-control Center Communications Protocol; Historical Recording System; Calculation & Scripting Subsystem; Disturbance Data Collection; Load Shed and Restoration; Automatic Generation Control and Dispatch; Energy Accounting; Transmission Network Security Analysis; Operator Training Simulator; Common Information Model Interface and Transaction Management System software products.

“We evaluated a number of quality SCADA/EMS vendors during the selection process. Our goal is to establish a life-long relationship with a vendor committed to state-of-the-art technology without the need to completely replace the system every few years. We look forward to working with OSI on our common mission of being able to quickly adapt to the changing Regulatory and Operating environments, and to provide the best customer service possible in a manner that is cost-effective and conducive to the environment,” said Wayne Ahl, Supervisor, System SCADA, Santee Cooper.

“We are very pleased to welcome Santee Cooper to our user family. We appreciate their trust in OSI’s technology and we look forward to delivering Santee Cooper a world-class SCADA/EMS system,” said Bahman Hoveida, President & CEO of OSI.

Santee Cooper is South Carolina’s state-owned electric and water utility and the state’s largest power producer. The ultimate source of electricity for 2 million South Carolinians, Santee Cooper is dedicated to being the state’s leading resource for improving the quality of life for the people of South Carolina.
