Schneider Electric introduces Altivar 21 AC drive for HVAC
PALATINE, Ill. — May 9, 2007 — Schneider Electric introduces the Telemecanique brand Altivar 21 Drive — the newest addition to the Altivar line of variable frequency AC drives. Designed for HVAC pump and fan applications, the Altivar 21 drive offers unmatched value in installed cost and function for HVAC equipment, allowing OEMs and control panel builders to focus on the essentials. The Altivar line of variable frequency AC drives provides a complete range of motor control requirements from simple machines to complex applications.

“We designed the Altivar 21 drive to be the ideal solution for OEMs or panel builders who are seeking an economical, easy-to-use drive with wide functionality in a small footprint required for space-sensitive pump and fan applications,” said David Landry, senior drives product manager, Schneider Electric North America. “The Altivar 21 drive meets the market demand for a quality drive for those less demanding HVAC applications, such as heating and cooling supply fans, intake and exhaust ventilation fans, cooling tower fans, chilled and hot water supply pumps, cooling tower pumps and fountain pumping.”

Although the newly released unit is economical, it comes with the functional benefits inherent in the Altivar line, including intuitive installation and operation. The drive allows expedited start-up because it comes with factory-configured parameters and simplifies wiring. It also features a local/remote button so users can take control of it for testing and troubleshooting, simplifying the monitoring, diagnostics and control of each unit.

The Altivar 21 drive boasts a compact footprint, allowing side-by-side mounting to save panel space. It offers up to 40 HP at 240V and up to 100 HP at 480V, providing sufficient horsepower for HVAC pump and fan applications in office buildings, educational campuses, commercial facilities and data centers. Additionally, a unique design optimizes the diode bridge and capacitance to provide effective harmonic mitigation without using additional line reactors or DC chokes. This saves considerable panel space and cost.

The Altivar 21 drive can easily be integrated into building management systems through its internally mounted option cards. It also reduces installation costs by eliminating throttling valves or inlet guide vanes typically used to control flow. Like all Altivar AC drives, the Altivar 21 increases the return on investment by modulating motor speed to provide immediate energy savings and extend equipment life.

“The Altivar 21 drive is another opportunity for end users to achieve real energy savings through smart technology,” Landry said. “The entire line of Altivar variable frequency drives can go a long way in helping a new or existing building achieve greater energy efficiency. Not only will users save money on their HVAC systems through reduced power consumption, but they also will increase the comfort level within the building and reduce equipment maintenance costs and downtime.”

Like its Altivar predecessors, the Altivar 21 drive provides protection at all levels: thermal guarding of the motor, alarm and external fault management, and protection against overheating and corrosive environments. Furthermore, the drives are environmentally friendly, using materials selected for minimal impact on the environment and conforming to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.

The Altivar 21 AC drive is available in two voltage ranges: 1 to 40 HP model at 200 to 240V and a 1 to 100 HP model at 380 to 480V.
