Siemens enhances S7-mEC embedded controller
November 19, 2009 - Siemens Industry announced it has enhanced its S7-mEC modular Embedded Controller system with new expansion modules for additional hardware interfaces and a new controller with an integrated HMI.

The S7-mEC is the first Simatic product to offer the best capabilities of S7 controllers and PC-based systems. The S7-mEC system merges the design concept of the Simatic S7-300 controller family with the power of Microsoft Windows embedded. Users benefit from the rugged design of the S7 built-in backplane and I/O modules combined with the power of an open system PC-based platform for advanced data handling and custom algorithms.

The new expansion modules, the EM PC and the EM PCI-104 expand the number of available PC-specific interfaces to the system. By adding open interfaces such as USB, serial, Gigabit Ethernet, DVI-I monitor port and PCI-104 to this system, it is now possible to apply this embedded architecture to any PC-based automation application.

Complimenting the S7-mEC family, the new EC31-HMI/RTX controller adds HMI functionality. With the new controller, the Intel Core2 Duo microprocessor can be used for control and visualization tasks. With WinAC RTX 2008 and WinCC Flexible 2008 pre-installed on the system, the user can set up a complete control solution on one piece of hardware that requires minimal configuration or installation.

Siemens S7-mEC products are accepted worldwide as control and I/O solutions for both simple and complex applications including discrete machine control, regulatory process control, remote telemetry, SCADA and motion control.

“Automation users can now combine S7 controller functionality with open PC-based capabilities, including HMI screens, in a rugged PLC hardware package. This configuration saves significant cost and integration time over combining separate PLC, PC, and I/O devices,” says Jim Wilmot, Siemens Simatic Controllers Product Manager.
