Siemens Releases Software Engineering Tool for Cause/Effect Diagramming and Configuring SIMATIC Process Safety Systems

Reduce engineering hours and minimize errors throughout the safety lifecycle with this innovative safety system engineering tool.

SPRING HOUSE, Pa. (October 5, 2004) — Siemens Energy & Automation announces the new SIMATIC Safety Matrix engineering tool for its SIMATIC Process Safety Systems. The Safety Matrix software merges into one tool the traditionally separate steps of creating a cause and effects matrix diagram and configuring the safety system. This innovative software tool greatly simplifies the design, specification, implementation, testing and maintenance of a process safety system. Users have reported that this tool has reduced their engineering time by 50% and checkout time by 60%, as it easily combines tasks that were typically handled separately.

The Safety Matrix was originally released for the QUADLOG Safety PLC in 1999 and significantly contributed to its success by providing easily demonstrated cost savings and safety improvements for the end user. Recognizing the success and benefits of the Safety Matrix, Siemens has now implemented the patented Safety Matrix technology for the SIMATIC S7-F process safety systems.

A new feature of the SIMATIC Safety Matrix is the Safety Matrix Viewer, which provides automatic integration of the Safety Matrix into the SIMATIC PCS 7 process automation system Operator Station (OS). The Safety Matrix Viewer provides visualization of an online cause and effect diagram without requiring any HMI configuration. Implemented as a faceplate, the Safety Matrix Viewer interfaces directly with the logic in the controller and provides dynamic graphical display for the operator. This technology ensures that the HMI is always synchronized with the logic in the controller.

The SIMATIC Safety Matrix is another example of Siemens ongoing innovation in automation and safety systems for the process industries.
