September 14, 2010 - AdvanceBio Systems selected Siemens Simatic S7-1200 controllers to automate its Bench Scale Hydrolyzer System. The Hydrolyzer System will be commissioned by The Pennsylvania State University for its Shared Fermentation Facility at University Park, Penn.

“AdvanceBio Systems and The Pennsylvania State University intend to collaborate in the University’s R&D effort to help further the research in this emerging field,” said Bipin Shroff, principal at AdvanceBio. “The equipment will be used for research, development and demonstration of technology related to the production of biomass-based fuels and chemicals from lignocellulosic feedstocks.”

The S7-1200 controller is designed for simple and highly precise automation tasks. Operators will be able to access three drive processes on graphics displayed on a 6” color touch screen HMI. The system also includes Siemens Sinamics MM440 variable frequency drives, reactor pressure control and temperature monitoring as well as the timer settings and valve control for the material discharge.

“Siemens S7-1200 automation technology enables us to integrate software for both the automation and HMI. That simplifies engineering and support efforts,” said Rick Agar, Engineering lead for AdvanceBio Systems LLC’s Bench Scale Hydrolyzer System. “Additionally, Siemens global support will help us market the system worldwide.”

“By partnering with AdvanceBio Systems to automate its hydrolyzer system, we are helping conduct important research to develop biomass-based fuels and chemicals,” said Rich Chmielewski, Chemical and Biofuels marketing manager for Siemens Industry, Inc.
