Softing updates BC-200-CAN electrical tester
November 22, 2009 - Softing announced a new version of its CAN-bus electrical testers BC-200-CAN. The latest version (V3.0) of this diagnostic product was enhanced with additional support for the SAE J1939 protocol. The SAE J1939 protocol is the vehicle-bus standard used for communication and diagnostics among vehicle components that was originally defined by the car and heavy duty truck industry in the United States.

Softing's electrical tester for CAN-based network systems (e.g. DeviceNet, J1939, CANopen, etc.) is the de-facto industry-standard for evaluating the signal property and quality level on a given network. The electrical tester assists control engineers or systems integrators to identify network problems early-on during the commissioning phase. In addition, the electrical tester is extremely valuable for troubleshooting communication breakdowns because it is able to significantly shorten the time to resolve the communication faults by accurately determining the exact location of the problem.

The user-friendly software package connects to the CAN-bus electrical tester via a USB cable. The software visualizes the diagnostic information and automatically generates comprehensive test reports. These test reports can be exported as a set of CSV and graphic files to allow further processing with, for example, MS Office products.

The following list summarizes the functionality of the CAN-bus Electrical Tester:

  • Tester for the electrical signal quality of CAN-bus devices and networks
  • Works with all CAN-bus based communication technologies (e.g. CANopen, DeviceNet, J1939, SDS, etc.)
  • Ideal tool for installation, commissioning, and maintenance
  • Isolates errors in CAN-bus cabling as well as defective signal-drivers and other electrical errors
  • Non-Intrusive signal testing on running network
  • Integrated data simulator to actively send user-configurable test messages
  • Station-specific measurement with built-in oscilloscope with trigger and zoom
  • Integrated oscilloscope trigger
