Thermo Fisher to provide LIMS to Argentinean water company
November 17, 2009 – Aguas y Saneamientos Argentinos (AySA), a water and waste water company serving the City of Buenos Aires and its suburban areas, selected Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS (laboratory information management system) to improve quality control processes in its local and regional laboratories. SampleManager LIMS will help manage the quality control processes and data generated by the company’s central laboratory and its six operating plants, ensuring potable water quality and sanitation system safety. SampleManager LIMS will automate and accelerate processes from sample collection to results and report generation, saving AySA time and reducing costs through improved production efficiencies.

AySA carries out more than 900,000 laboratory tests each year, analyzing in excess of 240,000 samples to ensure the quality of its drinking water and environmental compliance of treated wastewater. SampleManager LIMS will play a significant role in this process, automatically capturing sample data and reporting on out-of-specification results. SampleManager LIMS will also be instrumental in assembling the critical data generated in AySA’s laboratories into a variety of report formats, ensuring water supplied to its customers complies with strict government regulations and reporting requirements for the water industry.

AySA, together with the national government of Argentina, is engaged in the task of updating and improving the treatment and distribution systems for both potable water and sanitation - basic pillars for the development and welfare of the community. Water quality is continuously controlled through AySA’s Command Center and Remote Service and Central Laboratory, which is equipped with the latest technologies. The Central plant is in operation 24 hours a day, monitoring the physical, chemical and biological properties of the water, from the time it enters the plant until it reaches Buenos Aires households for consumption. The addition of Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS to AySA’s facilities will not only ensure timely delivery of quality results, but will also improve the internal operational efficiency of the company.

According to Alberto Chiari, technical and geographic systems manager at AySA, “The system will improve productivity and increase accuracy in the company's laboratories, enhancing efficiency and the quality of service provided by AySA. SampleManager LIMS is a critical tool in our laboratory infrastructure that enables us to efficiently manage a wide variety of results and provides for the consistent and reliable delivery of data that is required to ensure the quality of drinking water.”

Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS is a flexible, scalable enterprise LIMS for companies seeking a corporate standard for Quality Control operations. SampleManager is a proven tool for the efficient testing of samples that routinely pass through a typical laboratory, whether process testing, quality assurance or R&D, by sorting test information and organizing it into specific report formats to meet regulatory requirements. The complete testing routine is managed by the LIMS, from sample login to testing, re-testing, and final reporting. Data is automatically and securely captured from instruments, eliminating potential manual transcription errors and improving the flow and management of laboratory data. A standard interface is used within the lab and throughout the organization to integrate the broad variety of instruments and enterprise systems in place, simplifying and streamlining operations by increasing automation.

Dave Champagne, vice president and general manager for the informatics business at Thermo Fisher says, “It’s a pleasure to be partnering with AySA as they work with the Argentinean government to improve the processes and methodologies for providing clean water and basic sanitation to the population of greater Buenos Aires. Our growing presence in South America, providing informatics solutions to a broad range of industries, is strengthened by our work with AySA to improve efficiencies in local and governmental laboratories serving the most basic public needs.”
