CHICAGO (March 3, 2003) Increasing consumer and industrial demand for safer products and processes within global industries have led to rising demands for processes that reduce waste, increase capacity utilization, and provide a safer operation. It is an irrefutable fact that industrial processing of many materials is an inherently dangerous activity. Effective July 1, 2003, it will be mandatory that products designed and manufactured within or for export or sale into the European Union meet the European standards for Electrical Apparatus for Potentially Explosive Atmospheres, or the new ATEX (Atmosphere Explosive) directive. This directive relates to the selling and bringing into service of products in these countries, designed for use in areas subject to explosive atmospheres caused by gases, steam, vapor and dust. The definition of an explosive atmosphere is one where there is a presence of flammable substances and sources of ignition in the air under atmospheric conditions. ATEX has been running in parallel with existing regulations and is optional until June 30, 2003. After this date, all new plant and equipment for installation in hazardous areas must be ATEX certified. Major projects already in engineering must consider the implications of ATEX. Weidmuller offers the most comprehensive range of ATEX certified products, including enclosures, rail mounted terminals and fieldbus accessories. With its complete custom service approved for the manufacture of ATEX assemblies, Weidmuller will mill, drill, paint and assemble enclosures (or provide empty enclosures) to customer specifications. Whatever the connection preference, Weidmuller can support every need with screw connection in the classic SAK- and extensive W-series, tension-clamp in the Z-series and for the fastest connection of all, insulation displacement (IDC) technology in the I-series all, of course, available with ATEX certification. Weidmullers standard Ex-range of enclosures and terminals are designed and certified for use in Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2 environments. Furthermore, in Zone 0 applications fieldbus connector units, pre-assembled cabling and accessories are designed foremost for ease of use and overall plant reliability. Following demand from the North American market, Weidmuller has certified a range of power supplies to Class 1, Division 2 requirements (equivalent Zone 2). Of course, for all hazardous area applications, there is a complementary safe area control and monitoring requirement. Signal conditioning, over-voltage protection (also available for intrinsically safe circuits), relay and opto-coupler isolation, rail mounted terminals, and a host of accessories are certified to international standards. In addition, Weidmuller has an extensive range of tools for cutting, stripping, crimping, and fastening, as well as markers and marker systems for permanent and reliable plant and cable identification. Weidmuller, Inc. is the U.S. operation of Germany-based Weidmuller Interface GmbH and Companythe worlds leading supplier of electrical connection technology such as terminal blocks, printed circuit board terminals and connectors, relay sockets and plugs, and power supplies. Weidmuller has approximately 3,400 employees worldwide, with 70 sales organizations or offices in more than 60 countries.
