Westermo Data Communications releases RS232/485 industrial modems
August 23, 2006 - Westermo Data Communications has released a new range of high performance telephone modems designed to provide reliable connections to remote PLCs and networks within industrial environments and in areas of high level interference. This is the perfect solution for installation at unmanned sites which prevents the need for costly service trips.

The TDW-33, TD-36 and TD-36/485 are all dedicated to industrial applications. They are tri-galvanically isolated (power supply, RS232/432, PTSN port) to protect the modem from interference or voltage surges. They mount easily on to a 35mm DIN-rail, conform to ROHS standards and have an extended working temperature range of -25°C to +70°C.

Reliability and information security
The modems are equipped with transient protection on the line side and with a “watchdog” function that monitors and automatically resets them in the event of a fault. They also have password protection, dial-back security and caller ID functions to ensure that only authorised users can communicate with the modem and any connected equipment.

The range:
The TDW-33 is a V.90 modem. It can support bi-directional data rates of up to 33.6 kbit/s on Public Switched Telephone Network (PTSN) lines, and has an RS-232 interface supporting terminal data rates up to 115kbit/s.
The TD-36 has all the features of the TDW-33, but can also support bidirectional data rates of up to 33.6 kbit/s on leased lines. A `Fast Connect’ function ensures that leased lines can re-establish connections in less than 5 seconds.
The TD-36/485 extends the functionality of the TD-36 further with an additional RS422/485 interface supporting terminal data rates up to 115kbit/s. The TD-36/485 also has a single digital input and output relay. Both the digital input and output are galvanically isolated from the rest of the modem.

Remote configuration :
TDW 33, TD 36 and TD 36/485 both have the possibility to be remotely configured, using 3 different channels :
  • GSM, for instance with the GDW range of Westermo
  • RTC, usual telephone line
  • ISDN.

    Long term solutions :
The new TD-series modems are based on modern DSP technology with Westermo’s proprietary API allowing the creation of customized functions and the prevention of redesigns due to future chips’ obsolescence. They also use easily sourced digital signal processing equipment. This ensures the products are accessible for many years satisfying the industrial market’s need for long term availability.
