Wonderware Announces Winners of Annual Wonderware Open Application Contest

LAKE FOREST, Calif., Jan. 13, 2005 -- Wonderware, an operating unit of Invensys Systems, Inc., today announced winners of the 2004 Wonderware Open, the company’s annual international industrial automation application competition.

“The Wonderware Open is now in its 11th year, and we continue to be excited by what our customers and system integrators are achieving with Wonderware software,” said Thomas Muth, director of product marketing for Invensys’ Wonderware and ArchestrA business units. “This year, we have been especially impressed to see the benefits our customers have been deriving from the underlying ArchestrA technology that enhances our latest FactorySuite A² products.”

The winners in the five application categories are:

SAB Miller
Best Plant Supervisory System Solution Using FactorySuite A² Products

SAB Miller is an innovative brewing company that recognized the huge cost savings potential of the Wonderware Industrial Application Server and the FactorySuite A² product line. SAB Miller in South Africa used the Industrial Application Server, which is built on Invensys’ ArchestrA industrial automation and information software architecture, as a platform for the rapidly developing automation and control standards of its Midrand facility and other breweries. The Industrial Application Server’s powerful reusability and change propagation capabilities allow SAB Miller to quickly migrate these automation and control standards throughout the SAB Miller family of breweries. With the use of the Wonderware Industrial Application Server, best practices are more quickly adopted and maintained, and engineering savings of up to 50 percent have been achieved.

Bridgestone Firestone, Costa Rica
Best Quality Solution Using QI Analyst Software

Bridgestone Firestone is committed to producing the highest quality tires available. To ensure high quality and peak plant performance, the Bridgestone Firestone plant in Costa Rica implemented an advanced application using Wonderware’s QI Analyst software. Using QI OLE automation objects, process data collected via Wonderware’s InTouch HMI was made available for real-time statistical process control (SPC) within the QI Analyst software. Manual data samples were eliminated, reducing the burden on plant staff and improving data accuracy. As a result, operators, supervisors and managers can now view real-time and historical process variation reports at any time, enabling them to proactively manage their plant’s quality levels.

Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL)
Best Productivity Improvement Solution Using IndustrialSQL Server and ActiveFactory Software

CNFL is the chief electrical power distribution company in Costa Rica. In an effort to deliver the best service possible, CNFL employed a solution combining a variety of Wonderware applications. A distributed SCADA application using Wonderware’s InTouch, SCADAlarm, SuiteVoyager and IndustrialSQL Server software help CNFL operate its system in an efficient manner. Data stored within the IndustrialSQL Server historian is served to ActiveFactory data analysis and reporting clients. Then Wonderware’s SuiteVoyager portal software delivers it to CNFL employees, giving them a clear picture of their distribution operations and allowing them to significantly reduce their response time to system power failures. During an outage, managers and other key personnel are immediately informed and provided detailed information so they can respond appropriately. Other benefits gained by the Wonderware solution include better confirmation of electrical interruption claims, improved prioritization of system improvements, reduced distractions for their operators, better analysis of off-system power purchases, and a decrease in monthly expenses.

The Yellow River in Zhengzhou, China
Best SCADA Application Solution Using FactorySuite A² Products

China’s Yellow River is comprised of 84 water regulation sluices spanning approximately 5,000 kilometers. The Yellow River Conservancy Commission, which manages this vital water source, selected a Wonderware supervisory control and plant intelligence solution for the highly distributed SCADA system it created to improve water regulation. The Wonderware Industrial Application Server built on Invensys’ groundbreaking ArchestrA software architecture played a particularly important role in this project, allowing for rapid system development and an exceptional three-month roll out. Engineering costs were minimized via reusable control objects and maintenance costs were minimized through the use of the Industrial Application Server’s change propagation tools. System changes can be implemented at the central facility and deployed via a wide area network, virtually eliminating field trips for software changes.

Spartanburg Water System, M/R Systems, Inc.
Best Multi-Site Process Solution

The RB Simms Water Treatment Facility located in Spartanburg, S.C. and the nearby Blalock Water Treatment Plant were upgraded to a modern control system powered by Wonderware’s InTouch for Terminal Services product. M/R Systems of Norcross, Ga., developed a networked control system for two treatment plants, an engineering department, and a maintenance and construction facility using advanced 3-D graphics. The graphics enabled operators to adapt to the new system with minimal training. Wide area redundancy was built in and operators in either plant could control both plants from a single location. Greater real-time operations information is now available to plant staff and considerable chemical cost savings have been realized.

“As a result of the ArchestrA technology, companies are able to make phenomenal upgrades to their operations in an impressively short amount of time, saving them thousands of dollars in engineering costs,” said Wonderware’s Muth. “What’s more, because the ArchestrA technology is designed to provide tight integration with software, hardware and applications from most industrial vendors, companies that select Wonderware software or third-party products that leverage ArchestrA technology can preserve their existing technology investments.”

Each Wonderware Open winner will receive a Wonderware Open trophy, a digital camera, a complimentary Wonderware software training class and inclusion in the Wonderware Open Hall of Fame.
