Site & e-Newsletter Subscription Incentives

So, here we are in the information age.  Are you overwhelmed with information?

Do you hesitate to subscribe to yet another e-newsletter or web site?  Which e-newsletters or web sites provide the most valuable content?  What would it take for you to recommend a web site or e-newsletter to a colleague?  These are all questions floating around in my head.  As a site owner/marketer, I'm always trying to come up with new ways to attract new subscribers.  There are a lot of web sites and e-newsletters in our little industrial automation and process control industry.  Over the past four years, we at Automationtechies.com have strived to provide the best, most industry-relevant, up-to-date content on our web site.  While I've been pleased with the steady increase of site traffic, I'm not so pleased with our subscription/member (registration) rate.  In a month, we typically receive 300-500 new subscribers.  Maybe I should be happy with that rate?

In the past, we've tried to give away prizes to lure in new subscribers.  But yet our subscription rate doesn't seem to increase.  We've tried pop-up windows in the past, but that's a win-lose situation.  Our subscription rate did increase, but site traffic decreased because everyone hates pop-ups, including me.  The number of visitors to our site continues to grow rapidly.  This month (March, 2004) it looks like we'll exceed 110,000 visitors.  But yet our subscription rate doesn't seem to increase.  Is everyone just too busy to subscribe or read another e-newsletter?  Is our subscription page too long?  Maybe more people would subscribe if we only required an e-mail address.  Unfortunately, I need to know more about a subscriber for a subscriber to be of any value to me.

Should we require people to register before they can access our web site?  I personally don't like this idea because it will probably drive people away and do more harm than good.

So, what's the answer?  I was hoping you could help!  As a current subscriber, I'm looking for your input to help us grow our subscription list.  Your feedback will be used to determine how we promote our site and e-newsletter.   Please answer this poll question, and if you have any additional comments, please send me a message by clicking on my name below.

What would it take for you to recommend our site/e-newsletter to 10 of your colleagues?

I would like something in return, i.e. give me something
My name in a drawing to win a prize, i.e. $500.00 gift certificate
Just your great content, no giveaway or drawing necessary
I like it, but I don't have time to recommend it to 10 colleagues
I don't have 10 colleagues in this industry that I could refer
I don't like it enough to recommend it

After you click submit, your browser will launch our home page and the poll responses will be displayed in the very right-hand column half-way down the page.  Thanks in advance for your e-feedback!

For those of you that participated in the Automation Engineering Book contest last week, Thank you!  We'll publish the winners in next week's e-newsletter.

Enjoy the rest of this e-news!

The Future of Information in Intelligent Devices

Rather than ever more centralized, large-scale intelligence, technology has evolved towards highly distributed, intelligent networked devices.  Benefits of networked, intelligent devices will be many (but not the same for manufacturers and users). The future holds access to more data, highly distributed networks, access to data in real-time, the ability to collect information about customer use, and product differentiation. Data Historians will be key to archiving and retrieving the data generated by intelligent devices. The Internet is evolving to interconnect all network-attached devices, effectively becoming the largest data acquisition and control network.
