Exporting Jobs Overseas
In the March issue of Control
Magazine, Walt Boyes wrote an interesting article (The
Failure of Nerve?) about why manufacturers are exporting
jobs overseas. Manufacturers and processors are attracted
to the lower operating and labor costs associated with overseas
facilities. In the article, Walt essentially puts the
blame on out-of-touch management and accounting practices.
Could manufacturers have prevented this workforce tragedy by
more efficiently managing their plants and processes? Good
question! I'm not an industry analyst, but I do see what's
going on in our industry.
The reality is manufacturing jobs
continue to go overseas. Even though our economy is
improving and the manufacturing industry is picking up, those
jobs will probably never come back to the US. Unemployment
remains very high. How are we ever going to replace all
those jobs? No one seems to have an answer to this
question. This topic has become an issue in the current
race for the presidency. Unfortunately, neither candidate
really has the answer to this question either. It seems
our government and the manufacturers are the only ones that can
turn this around. Can the government offer businesses
enough incentives to keep or even bring jobs back to the US?
Can manufacturers really change their management and accounting
methods in order to increase productivity and profitability?
I guess we'll just have to wait this one out.
Let me leave you with this...I saw
an interesting bumper sticker the other day that pretty much
sums it up for me. It read "I love my country but fear my
government." My faith is with the manufacturers, at least
for the time being.

Hierarchical State Machines in the Automation Process
Often during the process of
supporting, modifying or re-engineering automation software, I
have found myself making the same conclusion: "This is a
Hierarchical State Machine trapped in the body of a C program,
struggling to get out!" It seems that many programmers
tackle a problem in the A to Z approach, creating a program that
is chained to the original programmer's concept of how the
process is to be automated. The result is a system that is
difficult to support, suffers from instability, and is difficult
to add or modify functionality. This article will introduce you
to the concept of a Hierarchical State Machine (HSM) and show
you how this approach works so well in software engineering for
the automation industry.
