 Introduction

From One Techie to Another

Our featured article this week, Which Tuning Method Should You Use?, was written by John Gerry of Expertune.  The latest in a series on PID/Process Tuning, this article compares a number of tuning methods and identifies the tradeoff between speed of response and sensitivity of the process changing.  The best tuning method for your process will depend on your business objectives.  You can also read John's previous articles in the Resources & Tools section of our site, under Articles and White Papers --> PID Tuning / Loop Tuning.

In this issue, we're also featuring STI's Machine & Process Safeguarding Guide with CD-ROM with a wealth of information including machine and process safety educational resources, product information and applications considerations.

Our Featured Products this issue are the new CompactRIO System from National Instruments and AutomationDirect's new SureStep™ Stepper Motor System

Our training partner, AIT, has released their fall schedule of Controls/Motors, PLC, Instrumentation, Motion and Analyzer courses.  If you or anyone else at your facility needs training, be sure to check out these Essential Courses.

And, as usual, don't forget to review the Product Announcements, Company News and Job Postings added to our site in the last week.

On to the good stuff...Enjoy the rest of this e-news!

Which Tuning Method Should You Use?

There are many, many different tuning rules available. Quarter Amplitude Damping, Cohen-Koon, IMC, Trial-and-error, Lambda, Ziegler-Nichols, Shinskey, minimum IAE, to name just a few. Any tuning method will have proponents who push the merits of the method saying it guarantees this and that in terms of response and at the same time is robust and not very sensitive to the process changing. Which one should you use?
