We'd Like to Hear from You

From One Techie to Another

Hello everyone,

In the last two issues of this e-news, we've, OK I've, been sounding off about vendor-specific conferences compared to national trade shows. I have one more comment regarding national trades shows and then I'll move on to another topic...maybe.

If national trade shows are losing steam, wouldn't it make sense for ISA and NMW to start focusing more on regional shows? I'm not talking about the local (city-wide) ISA shows, which are pretty lame. I'm talking about picking 5 to 6 cities each year and doing a smaller regional scale of the national shows/expos. How about getting local distributors/reps involved? Wouldn't it be cool, if users could attend these regional shows and meet with the distributors...the guys that actually sell the products in that territory? The exhibits could be a joint effort between the manufacturers and the resellers. Of course, the cost of exhibit space must come down, but that should be inherant to a smaller venue. Overall, the costs for everyone would be lower. Ultimately, these events should be more customer-centric. Am I way off-base here? Send me your feedback via e-mail or post your opinions in our discussion forum at: Vendor-Specific Events vs. Major Trade Shows.

On to another topic. Jim Pinto wrote another thought-provoking article, this time about energy sources. A new book, The Bottomless Well: The Twilight of Fuel, the Virtue of Waste, and Why We Will Never Run Out of Energy, by Peter Huber and Mark Mills, changed Jim's views on energy conservation and usage. Maybe it will change your views also. As the demand for energy increases, more efficient energy sources will be realized. Oil is not the dominant fuel and we shouldn't be so concerned about the price of oil. Yes, we all feel the pinch right now. But, ultimately new technologies will emerge and our oil consumption will decrease. Read this article in full.

Energy – The Bottomless Well
For two centuries of industrial history the technologies used to find, extract, or capture energy from the environment have improved much faster than the estimates of supply has receded. New energy sources have always been developed to meet burgeoning demand. It is this– the belief in human ingenuity and progress – that generates the concept of “the bottomless well”.
