Hello everyone, I want to share this story with you because I was impressed with the lengths that a distributor had gone to effectively sell their automation wares. This past week, I had the opportunity to meet up with a local Minneapolis-based industrial automation products distributor called Braas Company. It was great to catch up with their engineering and product manager, whom I've known for about 15 years. We both went through Compumotor's (now a Parker company) Catch Program. To sum up the program, Compumotor recruited engineering candidates right out of college, sent them to their facility for a very thorough product and sales training, and then sent them to the field to sell their motion control products for one of their reps or distributors. I was placed with a Minneapolis-based Rep and he was placed with Braas. Anyway, the premise of my meeting was to see the Factory Automation Plaza that Braas has set up in their facility. The plaza is a virtual factory designed to integrate many of Braas' products and show their clients how various automation technologies can be combined to offer a complete solution. The plaza integrates robotics, vision, motion control, PLCs, HMI and SCADA software, wireless communications, Ethernet and DeviceNet communications, RFID, and safety products into a material handling machine and two robot work cells. Braas has invested a few hundred thousand dollars of automation equipment and weeks of time to develop this very valuable sales and support tool. They even have a window to this Flexible Automation Plaza (with cameras that you can actually control) on their web site, so remote clients and even some of their suppliers can see various products working together. It's no wonder that Braas is a top distributor for a number of their suppliers. Since Braas is a regional distributor, I know most of you won't benefit from the plaza, but I thought many of you, as fellow automation and control engineers, might appreciate this "complete solutions" concept. Enjoy the rest of this e-news! |
