Hello everyone, I just returned from Rosemount, IL where the inaugural SPS Electric Automation America Show (www.ea-america.com) wraps up today. Unfortunately, attendance was low, but that is to be expected for a first year show. Feedback from exhibitors indicates the quality of attendance was very high, i.e. those who attended were serious about new automation products. At the show you would have recognized exhibitors like Siemens, Beckhoff Automation, Bosch Rexroth, Lumberg, Danaher Motion, P+F, Woodhead and Phoenix Contact (to name few), but you may not have recognized other companies like B&R Industrial Automation, Baumüller, Sigmatek, and WEG Electric Motors. Many European companies exhibited for the first time in the US at this show in an effort to establish a market presence in the US. We've been scurrying to get the new product releases on our site, so you can see what's new from some familiar and maybe not so familiar vendors. We have a dedicated link to News from SPS Electric Automation America. But this show is not just about the exhibits, it's more about the sessions and training and networking opportunities. In his keynote address, Jim Pinto discussed global markets, technology innovations and our current mind set. Jim always has a great way of "saying it like it is" and he urges automation vendors and users to "think about it", i.e. come up with new ways to innovate and compete on a global level. As automation professionals, we all need to change the way we think and we all need to strive to make a difference. This is definitely a show that everyone in the automation industry should support. It's really the only show left that strictly focuses on industrial automation. Its sister show, SPS/IPC/Drives Electric Automation, held each year in Nuremberg, Germany also had a slow start with only 1,000 attending the first show. But, last year the show recorded over 1,000 exhibitors and more than 30,000 attendees. Why can't we do that over here? I think we can, but probably not in the same way they do it in Germany. I've talked in previous issues of our e-newsletter about how important shows and conferences are for our industry, exhibitors and attendees. In order for this show to be successful, they need backing from the major automation vendors. Yes, I'm talking about companies like Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Omron, ABB, etc. If you want to host your own vendor-specific shows and expos, great. But, I believe all vendors also have a responsibility to participate and support these national and international events. If you build it, they will come. Attendees will come if they see value. Value will come with support from all the major (and minor) vendors. If you don't like how the current shows are managed, voice your opinion...I think show organizers are ready to listen. Step up to the plate and show your users and your competition that you care about the global automation industry. Enjoy the rest of this e-news! |

Magnetic Bearings and Bearingless Drives The application of bearingless drives is emerging as an important technique in the areas of high-speed machinery and motion-control, and this book aims to provide a thorough grounding in the principles behind this cutting-edge technology. Basic principles are described in detail with practical examples to aid understanding, and the different types of bearingless drives are introduced, along with coverage of test machines and applications.
