NIWeek 2005
National Instruments kicked off their 11th annual Worldwide Virtual Instrumentation Conference yesterday in beautiful (and steamy) downtown Austin, TX. Senior Vice President of R&D, Tim Dehne, addressed the crowd with an electrifying keynote speech on how NI can help companies optimize physical and human resources. Dehne was then joined by product teams and partners who demonstrated the newest generation of products for automated testing, advanced measurement, real time, industrial control, and distributed deployment. NI's message is that one software package (LabView) along with a seemingly endless array of hardware components provides everything you need to efficiently test, control and design. It was impressive to see actual test systems set up and programmed within just a few minutes.

But, if you think this conference is just about instrumentation, you're wrong. NI is making a major play for the machine automation and control market share by offering Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) and I/O with high speed machine vision and motion control capabilities. One demonstration showed an NI PAC sort bearings by size, while another balanced three pendulums simultaneously. And yet a third demonstration showed how a PAC could instantaneously stop a table saw from cutting off a finger. Don't worry! A hot dog was used in the actual demonstration.

This year's conference brings together more than 2,500 scientists, engineers, customers, leading researchers, exhibitors, and NI employees. It is very refreshing to see so much enthusiasm. And, NI is doing their part to encourage students to enter engineering and science fields by providing products and resources to enhance engineering and science education. Automation.com is one of the proud sponsors of this year's event and we hope to participate in NIWeek for years to come.

Networks Everywhere – The Global Brain
I'll bet you think networks are a relatively recent "invention," something that has to do only with computers. Well, it turns out networks have always been around; even before we humans came on the scene. And it’s enlightening to think of networks this way.
