Engineers are Sexy too!
Isn't that an oxymoron? Well, it shouldn't be. In our society, the media portrays actors, actresses and athletes as heroes, role models and sex symbols. Very few of our children will become one of these "so-called elite". What do they really contribute? Why do we idolize them so much? What about the engineers, scientists and researchers that design new technologies and develop new cures? These are the people that have really contributed something to our society.
Sure, I'm guilty of watching television and being entertained by shows and sporting events. But, I'm appalled at how much money these entertainers rake in. How did that happen? Why did we create such a huge market for them? Because every time we turn on the television we see those personalities. We are brought into their fantasy world. We know every step they make. We seldom hear about the person who designed that latest chip or discovered a possible cure...the person that makes a whopping $100K per year.
Next time you turn on your huge flat screen TV, think about the person that designed the plasma or LCD technology that gives you such a vivid picture. Think about the automated machines that were used to make your very own TV, cell phone, or Blackberry. Without engineers, scientists and researchers we wouldn't have many of the high-tech gadgets we use every day. Without engineers, you wouldn't be able to watch that movie or football game.
Countries like China and India are now graduating more engineers than the US. Those societies haven't yet adopted our Western "ideals". Those societies are hungry for various technologies and they value those who develop them. We have created a society that idolizes entertainers and minimalizes technologists. It's our responsibility to change our focus.
Turn off your TV and put down the video game. Encourage your children to become engineers or researchers. Talk to them about the high tech wonders that engineers and scientists accomplish. After all, isn't that more sexy?
