Resolution: Automate Everything You Can
For example, just the other day I went to the bank (a different bank than usual) to deposit an expense check. I drove up to what I thought was an automated teller and found myself sitting in front of an actual person. Now, I haven't 'interfaced' with a live bank teller in years. I usually go to the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) to deposit and withdraw money. For a few seconds, I was confused. I didn't have a deposit slip and didn't know my account number by memory. All I had was my ATM card. Now what? After going back and forth with the teller, I quickly realized how much more efficient it is to use an ATM.
For your finances, use Quicken instead of using an old-fashioned, hand-written checkbook register. You can track all your expenses and automate payments. You can even download your transactions from your bank so you never have to balance your checkbook again.
For your household chores, use Roomba and Scooba to vacuum and mop your floors.
Shop online and save yourself lengthy trips to the stores.
The Internet and eMail have made all of us so much more efficient. Think about how much more you get done in one day than you could before these awesome tools. How did we accomplish anything ten years ago?
With web-based cell phones, Blackberries and iPods (my wife bought me one for Christmas and I love it), we have the World at our fingertips. And, it's only just begun.
Look for other ways to automate. By automating tasks in our everyday lives, we can free up our time for family and friends and maybe even exercise. Hey, you could kill two birds with one stone. Automate something in your life so you have time to exercise.
If you already use or do many of these things, Congratulations! You have made your life so much easier.
Have a prosperous, healthy and efficient new year.
