A Major Change Coming for E-mail Users
E-mail has changed the communication landscape for just about all of us. We use e-mail to communicate with everyone...colleagues, customers, suppliers, friends and family. For many of us, myself included, it's often faster to communicate with people via e-mail than it is to pick up the phone. Sure, sometimes it's best to talk to someone on the phone, but my first communication choice has definitely become e-mail.

The current e-mail landscape is about to change. AOL and Yahoo just announced plans to start charging companies who send e-mails a fee to ensure speedy delivery of messages. This is an effort to help reduce spam, phishing and identity theft by illegitimate companies. Senders who pay for this service will be guaranteed delivery by bypassing the spam filters. Messages from senders who don't pay for the service will be handled as they are now, with the possibility of being filtered.

E-mail users can still insure they will receive e-mail from "wanted" senders by adding those e-mail addresses to their address book. As a reminder, here are the e-mail addresses that we use to deliver messages...

  • e-Newsletter: enews@automation.com
  • Job notifications: info@automation.com
  • Messages from Automation Suppliers: newinfo@automation.com

To ensure delivery of Automation.com messages please be sure to add all of these e-mail addresses to your address book.

What does this mean to us? Right now, I don't plan on paying for delivery of our free newsletter and other services. AOL has always been a thorn to us because they seem to be very "spam filter happy". In the future, if we confirm that certain e-mail service providers are not letting our legitimate messages through, we just won't allow subscribers to use those e-mail addresses when they subscribe.

As an alternative to e-mail, we'll soon be adding RSS feeds to various areas of our site. You will be able to subscribe to various content on Automation.com using an RSS Reader or Aggregator. For more information on RSS, see What is RSS? Stay tuned for more information on RSS feeds from Automation.com.

It will be interesting to see how the e-mail fee all plays out. It may force e-mail recipients to be a little more diligent in managing their subscriptions and address book; and e-mail senders to clean and segment their lists. It may be a win-win for everyone. Or, it may just be another way for AOL and Yahoo to increase revenues.

By the way, if you use Microsoft Outlook as your e-mail client, you really need to check out the anti-spam software by Inboxer.com . I've been using it for more than a year and it's is nothing less than awesome. Try it for free...it will change your e-mail life.

ERP and CAD Integration in the Engineer-to-Order Environment
To most design engineers, an ERP system is either irrelevant or it is perceived as something that requires additional time and effort, often providing little or no value. One reason for this perception is that most ERP systems are not integrated with the design engineer’s drawing tool.
