From One Techie to Another

Live from Hannover Messe 2006
I'm writing this issue from Hannover Messe in Hannover, Germany, where the largest world-wide industrial show is in full swing. As part of the US Press Tour, I had the opportunity to attend the opening ceremony held on Sunday evening. This ceremony featured speeches by none other than H.E. Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India and Dr. Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany. Before coming to the show, I had no idea this event had so much political support from Germany, the rest of Europe and many other partnering countries (this year the partnering country is India). There is no doubt that Germany and India are very serious about growing their technology base and manufacturing infrastructure.

Hannover Messe is one of nearly one hundred trade fairs developed and organized by Deutsche Messe AG. Hannover Messe is massive. Try to imagine the largest trade show you can and then expand it. To give you an idea, in 2005, the fair attracted 208,234 visitors (from all over the world) with 6,133 exhibitors covering a 210,129 square meter area. The fair ground consists of dozens of halls, a convention center, restaurants, hotels, plus many other facilities to support the fair. It is not uncommon to see two and even three level booths here. Many booths include cafes where exhibitors can sit down and have extensive dialogue with visitors. The culture of this show is much different than any show in the US. Companies actually come to this show to sign contracts and finalize business deals.

Many of the larger exhibitors in the Factory Automation section of the trade fair include familiar global suppliers like Siemens, ABB, Rockwell Automation, Rittal, WAGO, Phoenix Contact, Beckhoff plus a multitude of other international companies that you probably wouldn't recognize (at least I didn't). This trade fair is truly a global marketplace.

If you haven't had an opportunity to attend Hannover Messe, you should add it to your list of things to do. I have to warn you that it's a bit overwhelming, but I'm certain you won't be disappointed.

Of course, we have collected a lot of news from the show, but as you can imagine, it's going to take some time to digest and publish it. Stay tuned to the web site for the news from Hannover Messe.

Where Did All the People Go? The New Case for Condition Monitoring
Not so long ago the main reason companies monitored equipment condition was to reduce direct maintenance expenses. Condition Monitoring (CM) and its logical extension, Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM), served them well by identifying impending failures early enough to avoid costly repairs and reducing downtime by only performing maintenance when required. Today, successful companies gain strategic advantage by leveraging scarce human resources on value adding activities that enhance equipment reliability in order to maximize production.
