Winning Together with Totally Integrated Automation
"Winning Together" with Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) is the theme of the Siemens Automation Summit this week in Las Vegas. This event has attracted over 900 industry professionals and offers 190 breakout sessions, 50+ customer success stories, partner pavilion, solutions showcase, and countless networking opportunities with global managers and technology experts.

Like any great conference, the summit kicked off this morning with the two awe inspiring keynote speakers. James Tomlinson, Head of Automation for MGM Grand Hotel/Casino and Cirque du Soleil, spoke about the extensive building automation system for this largest hotel in the US, with 44,000+ I/O points. James went on to describe the elaborate automation system controlling 206 axes of motion for the "KA" production by Cirque du Soleil. With 470 shows this year, the "KA" production alone employs 22 technicians and maintenance people. It just so happens that Cirque du Soleil is looking for an Assistant Head of Automation/Automation System Engineer to join their team.

The second keynote speaker was Tom Fitzgerald, Executive VP and Senior Creative Director for Walt Disney Imagineering. Tom gave a little history on Walt Disney and his fascination with technology. Over the years, Disney has been using the latest technologies to bring "life" to Disney characters and amusements. With Siemens' all-encompassing product and service offerings, it's no wonder that Disney has just signed a 12 year technology agreement with them. After hearing about the latest attractions and behind-the-scenes automation, I'm now anxious to go to Disney World and see it first-hand.

Siemens Energy & Automation offers hundreds of automation products, but it's not just about products. It's about integrated solutions, industry-specific expertise, service and support. It's about solving problems, improving productivity and reducing cost. Although Siemens is the largest automation supplier in the world, they do not have the largest market share in the US. However, their market share is growing and you will continue to see a significant push in the US.

Siemens realizes that they will not have initial success in trying to replace their competitors existing systems. So, they are focused on bridging the gaps that many other automation suppliers simply can't fill, including safety, industrial networking, wireless, RFID and MES. Siemens is having great success integrating these different technologies to solve tough problems. For example, one customer has successfully implemented a safety system over a wireless I/O network.

Many people don't realize that Siemens has decades of experience when it comes to networking and RFID technologies. Siemens has over 250,000 RFID readers in the market and they are the only company that designs, manufactures and sells both networking and automation systems.

According to Siemens, the MES market has never been more ready. Today, there are a number of issues driving MES initiatives including regulatory compliance, quality, six sigma, lean manufacturing, etc. Sure, there are hundreds of companies with various "silo" products in the MES space, but none of them have as broad of an offering as Siemens.

Totally integrated automation is the wave of the future and, from what I can tell, Siemens is ready to ride the wave.

Hey, maybe I'll see you next year when Siemens hosts this summit in Orlando, Disney's own backyard. I've never been to Disney World, so I'll be like a kid in the candy store.
