Independence
As the 4th of July approaches and we start planning our Independence Day festivities, I think about what has really makes America great. The United States is one of the most diverse nations in the world.

Where did our diversity come from? Different cultures. How were different cultures introduced in the US? Immigration. We are all children of immigrants. If not your parents, your grandparents and if not your grandparents, your great grandparents. I'm willing to bet that somewhere in your family tree there's an immigrant.

Immigration has made this country great. Throughout our history, individuals from dozens of different countries immigrated to the US in search of some kind of independence, e.g. economic, religious, social, etc. Even in this global economy, when so many other countries are becoming economically strong, immigration rates to the US are still very high. This is possibly because of the American dream...to have a good job, own a nice home and raise a happy family. The US still has the geographic capacity and the economic infrastructure. Or do we? We probably have the geographic capacity, but can we economically support high immigration rates with so much manufacturing leaving our country?

Why are US manufacturers having such a hard time competing in the global economy? With so many different cultures represented, shouldn't the US be in a better position to compete globally? Maybe in theory, but according to a quote by Jerry J. Jasinowski, President of The Manufacturing Institute, "Unfortunately, too many Americans are unaware of how dependent they are on manufacturing for their high standard of living, and too many policymakers are indifferent to the implications of losing our leadership in global manufacturing." In other words, many Americans don't seem to fully understand the significance of our declining positon in a global economy. I suspect that will take some time and perhaps a new administration.

It's up to us (the US) to leverage our diversity, keep global perspective, and manufacture change. But, it's not just going to happen by itself. We all have to act...our future depends on it. For more information on US manufacturing and how you can help, check out NAM's The Manufacturing Institute. Let's get our manufacturing edge back!

Due to the US Independence Day Holiday next week, we won't be publishing a newsletter, but we will continue to update the site with product and company news. Enjoy your Holiday and join us as we celebrate our diversity on this 230th Independence Day.

Understanding Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) in Industrial Automation
Automation manufacturers have responded to the modern industrial application’s increased scope of requirements with industrial control devices that blend the advantages of PLC-style deterministic machine or process control with the flexible configuration and enterprise integration strengths of PC-based systems. Such a device has been termed a programmable automation controller, or PAC.

OPC and PI/RtPM Application Report - July 12, 2006
The OPC Foundation is an industry consortium whose objective is to define data access implementation standards for the manufacturing industries. The Foundation has defined standards to allow vendors of time series databases to expose their data through a common programming interface. This standard has enabled the development of generic applications that are capable of accessing any time series database, as long as its vendor supports an OPC Server. The existing OPC standards will be reviewed and compared with the OPC UA (Universal Architecture) standard currently in development. OSIsoft has integrated OPC technology into its RtPM platform in many significant ways. OSIsoft has been asked to add OPC capability to some of its client applications. While we agree with this in principle, we suggest a different implementation. This presentation will include a description of our recommended architecture for the visualization of OPC data in RtPM applications.

In this Webinar you will see:
  • History of the OPC Foundation
  • Scope of the current OPC Standards
  • Overview of Upcoming OPC Universal Architecture
  • How OSIsoft's RtPM leverages OPC
