New Times Call for New Rules
Earlier this week I read an interesting article, Tearing up the Jack Welch playbook, written by Fortune senior writer, Betsy Morris. The article discusses how the US corporate landscape has changed and how the old rules for building a successful corporation, some originally coined by Jack Welch (retired CEO of General Electric), are outdated and must now be replaced by new rules. US business leaders are facing new challenges including job security, market volatility, pressure from investors and competition from China and India.
Below are seven new rules (and the rules they replace) that point toward a new model for success.
- Agile is best; being big can bite you. replaces Big dogs own the street.
- Find a niche, create something new. replaces Be No. 1 or No. 2 in your market.
- The customer is king. replaces Shareholders rule.
- Look out, not in. replaces Be lean and mean.
- Hire passionate people. replaces Rank your players; go with the A's.
- Hire a courageous CEO. replaces Hire a charismatic CEO.
- Admire my soul. replaces Admire my might.
Times are definitely changing. Companies need to adapt to stay competitive. New companies with new product offerings are springing up all over the place, many with a better product or solution at a lower cost. Examples of these rules can be found all over, including in our own industry. Just yesterday, rule three was enacted by two of the big dogs, Siemens and Emerson, when they adopted each other's fieldbus standards in the interest of their customers. Emerson adopts Profibus, Siemens adopts Foundation fieldbus so they can both expand global interoperability and increase functionality. Take a look around and I'm sure you'll find dozens of other instances where these new rules are followed.
As a person who runs a small business, these new rules really hit home for me. As you look within your own company, don't just blindly follow the old rules, challenge them. Find a new niche. Create a new product. Experiment with a new plan. Every successful leader or company took a chance at some point. Maybe it's your turn (or your company's turn) to make a change and a difference.
