Not just the same old ISA EXPO?
In a mere three weeks ISA will be kicking off their 2006 EXPO in Houston, Texas. For the first time since 9/11, Automation.com will be exhibiting. In addition, this year, Automation.com is an endorsing publication for the show. So with all the talk about the decline of trade shows, you might ask, "Why get involved?" The answer is simple. We want to participate in the largest (arguably) US-based automation-focused trade show in the United States.

ISA is currently anticipating 15,000 industry professionals from all over the world. That attendance is nothing compared to years ago. But, the fact remains that when 15,000 automation professionals get together in one place at one time, there's bound to be "some" excitement (and I use that term loosely, because we are after all engineers).

There are a couple of events this year that particularly caught my attention. The first, Innovation Alley, built by Dick Morley (the father of the PLC), is a place to see and experience technologies that are either emerging or have no use in your daily jobs (I think that translates into fun). As techies, this event will surely bring goose bumps (or the engineer's equivalent).

The second event, YAPFEST, is an event geared toward young automation professionals (YAP) and students who are studying automation and under 30 years old. Since this industry has a hard time attracting young people, this event is very encouraging and timely. By offering music, food and countless networking opportunities (you know, that stuff young people enjoy), I would expect this event to draw a crowd. I wonder if they will be checking IDs at the door?

As a media sponsor, I'd like to extend an invitation to you to join us at the show. ISA helped us put together the following fun little animated invite...

I hope to see you in a few weeks. Please stop by to say hello.

Warehouse Inventory Tracking System for Social Security Administration
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in their supply chain and logistics model to assist with tracking inventory between their warehouses located in Baltimore and the surrounding area. SSA ships more than 240,000 line items each year from their five warehouse facilities. They were using a barcode, labor intensive, scanning process, but this process was having difficulty keeping accurate inventory and shipping transaction records.
