ProSoft Technology’s FA Control Network Interface Module for ControlLogix

More Information on FA Control Network Interface Module

The FL-net Ethernet protocol was designed for real-time data transfer and high configurability, making it ideal for machining lines in automobile manufacturing applications which require fast, complex, custom processes. With the MVI56-FLN module, users can incorporate the functionality of the FL-net protocol into existing ControlLogix and EtherNet/IP networks, thus maintaining the versatility and power of the Allen-Bradley brand while vastly expanding the pool of products from which to bid and choose in future projects and retrofits.

    Standards Advancing Automation

ISA EXPO 2006 successfully kicked off in Houston, Texas yesterday despite the monsoon-like rains that stranded and delayed many travelers on Monday. One of the most frequented booths at the show was the Standards Theater, sponsored by The Automation Federation. The Standards Theater allows attendees to learn more about the cooperation of the world's leading experts and associations to develop industry standards and guidelines for use in manufacturing automation.

The standards reviewed in the theater over the course of ISA EXPO 2006 include:

    • ISA-SP101: Human-Machine Interface Standards
    • Security Considerations of the New OPC Unified Architecture
    • ISA-SP99: Security Standards
    • OPC-UA: Future of Real-time Architecture
    • ISA-SP100: Wireless Systems
    • Manufacturing Interoperability Guideline Working Group: A Collaborative Venture of OAGI, WBF, ISA, MIMOSA and OPC
    • ISA-SP84: Functional Safety Standards
    • ISA-SP88: Batch Control
    • ISA-SP95: Enterprise-Control System Integration Standards
    • Plus many more

Standards are important for all end-users of automation products because they ensure interoperability and minimize dependence on any one supplier. For these reasons, it’s imperative that end-users are involved in the development process of any standards relating to automation and process control.

In the September 20 issue of our e-Newsletter, we discussed the OPC standard and the emergence of OPC Unified Architecture. In today's issue, Jim Pinto takes another look at OPC (and OPC-UA) and stresses the importance of end-user involvement in the ongoing development of this crucial “interoperability” standard.

Automation.com is working with the OPC Foundation to increase end-user awareness and recruit end-user membership to this growing OPC standards committee. If you are an end-user, please take a minute to review our OPC Foundation Membership page and seriously consider becoming a member. If the benefits of membership are not compelling enough, please don’t hesitate to contact me to share your thoughts on what else the OPC Foundation can offer to make membership more advantageous to you, the end-user. Your feedback will be shared with the executives of the OPC Foundation so they can make any necessary changes to membership benefits. Your involvement is that important!

OPC – the standard that makes other standards interoperable
Standards are intrinsically difficult to implement and adopt. In the industrial automation business, OPC is a unifying standard that allows true interoperability. It needs more end-user support and involvement. End-users want standards because, more than anything else, they provide interoperability and reduce dependence on any specific supplier. For this very reason, suppliers only pretend to support standards, when, in reality, the ones they really promote are those that give them a distinct proprietary advantage.
