A home run for personal automation may open more doors for industrial applications

Take me out to the ball game! Pretty soon, your cell phone may just be able to do that. In the August 2, 2006 Issue of this e-newsletter, I wrote about a technology that could turn your smart cell phone into a little personal data center. Well Cisco Systems wants to make it a reality at the proposed Oakland Athletics' new ballpark in Fremont, California.

According to a CNN article last week, Stadium of the future swings for the fences, fans will be able to purchase and upgrade tickets through their smart cell phones. To gain entrance to the stadium, fans will swipe electronic tickets stored on their cell phone. Data on the cell phones will even dictate which ads appear on digital advertising displays, based on the fan's buying habits.

I know this may appear to have nothing to do with industrial automation, but this application embodies automation and it does use wireless technology. If Cisco can pull off this kind of application at a ballpark, I would think the technology could transfer to an industrial setting. Besides, I'm sure we have a few baseball fans out there; and you are engineers. Now, imagine if production displays or operator interface screens could change automatically based on which operator or manager is viewing the machine or process information. Is that a stretch? Maybe, but I bet there are applications out there.

Wireless is very hot right now. While walking around the ISA EXPO a few weeks ago, every other booth had something to do with wireless. Dozens, if not hundreds of suppliers have, or are working on, wireless solutions for the industrial environment. Companies that would have never dreamed about using wireless technology are having success and seeing tremendous ROI. Let me refer you again to last week's featured application story, Wireless Communication Saves the Day...And the Bottom Line. There are numerous applications out there to improve efficiencies; applications that just weren't feasible with a hard-wired solution. The evolution will continue and you will see more and more wireless applications in your daily lives, both personal and professional. The possibilities are endless.

Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, we won't be publishing an e-newsletter next week. Happy Thanksgiving! See you in two weeks.

Isolation Technologies for Reliable Industrial Measurements
Voltage, current, temperature, pressure, strain, and flow measurements are an integral part of industrial and process control applications. Often these applications involve environments with hazardous voltages, transient signals, common-mode voltages, and fluctuating ground potentials capable of damaging measurement systems and ruining measurement accuracy. To overcome these challenges, measurement systems designed for industrial applications make use of electrical isolation. This white paper focuses on isolation for analog measurements, provides answers to common isolation questions, and includes information on different isolation implementation technologies.
