    Countdown to online networking

We are still a couple weeks away from launching our networking site, but this week I was able to take a sneak peak. It’s coming together nicely and none too soon. With social networking sites like MySpace.com and Facebook.com taking off like wild-fire, this industry-specific network is sure to be a hit among automation professionals.

One of the most powerful features of the site will be the ability for users to create private groups and interact with other members within that group. Members within the group will be able to post private discussions and events. I can see these private groups being used by engineers within a specific company or working on the same project, who may not all be at the same physical location.

Of course, any member of the site will be able to create public groups, discussion forms and events that are open to anyone for view and participation.

For those of you who are avid bloggers or blog readers, this site will offer a blogger's paradise. You will be able to create your own blog or access and subscribe to any other blog hosted on the site. And, if you are a blogger with a blog already on another site, you can simply import it to this site.

If you are like me and haven't tried one of the social networking sites, you're going to want to give this one a try. Let's be honest, most users of social sites are below the age of 35, which is why I hadn't tried it before. But, there is a reason millions of young people are using them...because they work. Our site will give you an opportunity to try out this "new" phenomenon on a professional level. After all, if you haven't figured out yet that the future is online, the world may just pass you by. (nudge, nudge)

If you missed it in a previous issue, here’s an overview of what the site will offer:

    • Create your own profile with contact info, career info, education, interests, etc.
    • Create your own home page with RSS news feeds, correspondence, calendar reminders
    • Create private or open groups
    • Join existing groups and communicate with other members
    • Privately e-mail other members
    • Invite other colleagues to join groups or events
    • Search for other members, blogs, forums, etc.
    • Create or respond to discussion forums, either private or public
    • Read and create blogs
    • View and post events to a calendar, either private or public
    • and much, much more tailored specifically for the industrial automation industry

Remember, if you would like to get a preview of the site before it's released to the general automation public, please submit your e-mail address and I'll make sure you get a sneak peak.

Stay tuned for networking of the future.

Enjoy the rest of this eNews!

Understanding Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) in Industrial Automation
Automation manufacturers have responded to the modern industrial application’s increased scope of requirements with industrial control devices that blend the advantages of PLC-style deterministic machine or process control with the flexible configuration and enterprise integration strengths of PC-based systems. Such a device has been termed a programmable automation controller, or PAC.
