In memory of those who served

Memorial Day in the United States was first observed 139 years ago on May 30, 1868, a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Other countries have also instituted similar observations or holidays.

I recently read the following paragraph regarding the History of Memorial Day:

"Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years. Many Americans have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored and neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country."

"Many feel that when Congress made the day into a three-day weekend with the National Holiday Act of 1971, it made it all the easier for people to be distracted from the spirit and meaning of the day."

In 1999, a bill was introduced to the Senate proposing to restore the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day back to May 30th instead of the last Monday in May. It's no surprise to me that this bill has made no further progress.

We (every country) owe a huge debt of gratitude to the men and women who served and died for our countries. However, for many Americans specifically, Memorial Day mostly symbolizes the start of summer vacation schedules. I suspect many Americans are all for re-establishing this tradition of observation, but not at the loss of one of our few three-day weekends. Maybe that seems shallow, but the reality is that we all work hard all year long. And summer is the time of year when we can unwind with our families.

Unlike many European countries, corporations in the United states do not shut down for weeks at a time for summer holiday. Many Americans cherish the long three-day weekends and plan summer vacations around these Holidays. Maybe every country needs to institute a summer shut-down to give people a chance to rejuvenate.

It's nearly impossible for any government to enforce a memorial observation. Unfortunately, most people (and I include myself) just have too many other things going on in our lives. However, government and media need to remind all of us to take a moment to observe.

I know I sometimes take my personal freedoms for granted and often forget the sacrifices made by so many men and women. I know our e-newsletters reach professionals in many other countries that may not have the same freedoms and liberties as we do in the U.S. To all those, I sincerely hope they someday will. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who have lost lives and loved ones, not only in the U.S., but in every country around the world.

So today, take a minute and remember those who have died for your freedom and those who are serving today.

Enjoy the rest of this eNews!

Programmable Automation Controllers Find Their Niche…Everywhere!
In the beginning there were relays, and hardwired controllers. A generation ago, digital electronics made the hardwired relay and controller obsolete in favor of the PLC, the programmable logic controller. But PLCs are limited. Several companies have produced a powerful and useful hybrid of the programmable controller and the PC. This device is generally called a PAC, or programmable automation controller.

MooreHawk’s new TRUNKSAFE brochure explains how, with TRUNKSAFE, it is not necessary to duplicate the entire segment to achieve redundancy. Most important, it is not necessary to duplicate the field instruments nor to have any special software at the DCS, which can save users tens of thousands of dollars per fieldbus segment.
