What’s in a Name? (A portal by any other name is not the same)
The word “automation” has a pretty broad meaning when you consider everything it encompasses. As anyone would expect by our name, the Automation.com web site covers just about every aspect of automation related to manufacturing, both process and discrete. Since we publish so much content on the site daily, we anticipated that many visitors would have a hard time sorting through all the information to find exactly what they were looking for. It’s been almost one year since we launched 24 Product Portals designed to organize content on Automation.com by topic.
Each portal is organized by the following sections so you can easily find content of interest:
- videos and podcasts
- articles and white papers
- featured products
- product announcements
- application stories
- company and organizational news
- resources and literature
- application news
- training and seminars
- events
There is no question in my mind that we publish more automation-related content than other web site – by leaps and bounds. Not only are we populating these portals with content that we publish, we are also searching the web, on at least a monthly basis, for other applicable content. If we find any applicable articles, resources or whatever, we’ll provide links to it from our portals. So OUR portals are true Web Portals - they function as a point of access to information on the Internet, as defined on Wikipedia.
Over the Holidays we did revamp the portals a bit; combining a few, expanding Automation Software into three portals, and adding a new Security portal. Remember that we publish a topical newsletter in conjunction with each portal. Our Automation Weekly subscribers were automatically added to the distribution lists for most portals, so please review your profile and preferences to ensure you receive the newsletters you want. To update your subscription profile, please use the link in the footer of this e-newsletter, or click here. (Be sure you use the links in the actual e-mail newsletter, not the online version)
As the portals are building momentum and traffic, they are also gaining sponsors. I'm pleased to report that many of our portals and topical e-newsletters already have the support of many automation suppliers through annual sponsorships.
With our 24 portals, and with the frequency they are being updated, you really have no reason to go to any other automation web sites. Right? As always, we are interested in your feedback. Tell us how we are doing.
Happy New Year!
Enjoy the rest of this Automation Weekly!

European Exporting Boom 2008
While consumers just added thousands of dollars more debt to their credit card balances and bears and bulls at the stock exchange take turns predicting gloom or boom times, the U.S. economy trade data at an annualized rate is nearing 20% improvement. Strengthening the demand for U.S. goods are the powerful overseas economies combined with a very weak dollar, which has dropped a corresponding 20% over the past five years.
